    Wahoo fishing Thursday

left Bogue inlet at about 4:30 and ran out towards the rise. put the lines in about 15 minutes before sunrise
2 long riggers,2 short riggers, 2 planer rods, 1 long line, 1 short naked hoo in the wash and 1 shot off the starboard corner
llong line gets smashed after about 30 seconds and cuts the mono leader. lost a $19 blue and white islander
next BAM the planer trips great got him NOPE he missed the hook
next long line again and I saw this wahoo sky on the bait he runs about 100 yards off the 50 wide and line goes slack did not get the hook in him
I am thinking damn what am I doing wrong? we cant hook anything
planer rod starts bouncing good he is hooked up and Mrs Barbara gets her first ever Wahoo

well about 7 or 8 short strikes later Buck gets his first Hoo

all in all it was a good day the talk on the radio was the big boats were not doing much so we left heading back to the inlet at 3:30 feeling good about our 2 Wahoo
both fish were caught off the planer rod
I went thru 2 dozon bally hoo due to short strikes that most did not even trip the clips
It sure beat staying at home

Purdy work on the hoos. A couple of suggestions, never run mono in the fall unless it is a dink on the flats, a sail does not care about the wire. Drop back on any thing that does not come tight off the strike. Give em 4-5 seconds in free spool push the drag up crank like hell for a sec. then drop again, do this about 4 times before you give up on a fish. As for the fish that pulled drag for a while and got off there is a good chance that was a sail. Again drop it back to them. If someone is able to, they should also dump the other rigger it freespool to "prospect" for others.

Brad we did drop back on the short strikes that we knew of
the biggest problem was they were cutting the bait without tripping the clips or pulling any drag.the clips were set just tight enough to hold the bait.I would bring a bait in to check it and the damn thing was cut in half
I knew better than to pull mono but I had to try it

brad we did hook up with 1 fish on the dropback but it did not make it to the boat

Cut behind hooks more than likely were kings.
Wahoos inhale as much of the bait as they can before chomping down. That is why when they cut you off the cut is in front front of the bait most of the time. Inhaled bait, closed mouth mono = cut leader. Baywolf even mentioned this about short strikes last year. Sometimes they will cut the bait but a dropback half bait and head will get them. Dropping back wit ha 50 to me at least takes some practice. It is not like a finesse dropback with a dink reel.

That is a good catch of fish there reel life. Pretty day and smiles all around. Nice job!
