I have read a lot about planers and rods but no has talked about baits. What are some of your favorite baits and how are they rigged ?

    Welcome to the site!!

We use #8 piano wire leader with a 9/0 Mustad 7691 hook stiff rigged. The stiff rig helps get a better hook up.

Run the wire through the eye of the hook...
Then wrap the wire around the shaft of the hook close to the eye....
Then back out the eye of the hook the opposite way you went in...
Then do you Haywire Twist like normal.
Make sure you measure where the hook is going to go and mark the hole though. It has to be rigged just right when you stiff rig them. Take the extra time to measure it up though.

We have a couple different lures we use. Our most popular has been one of the Cape Lookout Lure heads.

We use big medium hoo's or larges hoo's sometimes.

    Hope this helps.

I make a bait that I like out of a squid skirt and a 3 oz lead head. Same as the upright troller and the matanza bait that a lot of guys use here. Had success with that. These are used for deeper presentations.

Also I like any kind of large profile bait with flash tied into it. Favorite colors are based with black or purple and any type of high vis contrasting color. IE pink and black, black and orange, purple and black, red and black, blue and pearl. Don't discount getting a wahoo on top as well. Witches will get the piss knocked out of 'em.

I use a 7691 8/0 or 9/0 in everyting I pull with a lure bait combo for meat. I like the closed throat on these hooks, plus it has a long curved point that is easier for me to get VERY sharp.

There's a diagram of the "stiff rig" on the back of the Billy Bait strip bait packaging. I use it all the time. Works well.

The next bite on a jig.
The stiff hook rig is pretty cool. I have seen one benefit being that most of the time when you hook up its centered straight through the bottom of the jaw. It jerks the mouth open and makes short work of them. Not much sport, but you don't loose many. Kelsey's first Hoo came this year on a stiff rig, which was just right for her.
