    Wahoo!

Fellow 'Box fan and Hawaiian SuperBar Pro Staffer Courtland Pang put another nice 'Hoo on the boat this week:

"Trolling has been generally slow so a good buddy and I went on his boat to do some jigging at a FAD. We soon learned the hard way that the men in the gray suits were there collecting taxes! We lost one good-sized fish and a buddy on another boat got just the head of his fish with the sharks taking the rest. The fish then seemed to do what people do when tax collectors are in the area - HIDE. We made several more drops but to no avail, so we set up and trolled out. The ocean was like a blue desert, but we found one ono (wahoo) which could not resist my buddy's JT Special RuckusRaiser's invitation to dinner. Archer SuperBars saved the day for us again!"

I've only had a spreader bar in the water a few times but I have a question. Can you run wire to your chase bait? What's the down side if it's even possible?

YES.....you can run wire to your chase bait. In fact many of Freds Ruckus Raisers and Superbars are rigged with wire for just that purpose.

Go to www.archersuperbars.com to see the store and when ordering be sure to ask for the chasebait to be on wire.

Like Ace1st said, you surely can run a wire-rigged chasebait on any Archer bar (the bar teasers don't come rigged with wire, just the chasebait if you so order it). In fact, Capt. Archer recommends using wire anytime you're in ono (wahoo) territory. Like 'Box said, we were just lucky that ono didn't chew through the mono leader on that chasebait. We had mono on instead of wire because we were nowhere near ono territory, trolling far offshore from any ledges and with no flotsam in sight.

Here's another ono we got on mono but this time the chasebait was armed with a c-hook and with the hook planted in the corner of its mouth the mono stayed out of harm's way. C-hooks are an upgrade you can order with your Archer SuperBar chasebait at no additional charge.

And here's an ono caught using wire. If you look closely you can see the bar at the left edge of the photo and the chasebait just barely sticking out of the ono's mouth. Swallowing the chasebait that deep, this ono would surely have got away had we been using mono. (My great friend from CA, Nicholas Raino, holding the ono, now fishes with a better fisherman than me; RIP Nick.)

If you leader correctly (don't grab the wire - no need to do so) there is no downside to using wire (presuming you begin with a correctly formed haywire/barrel set up). See how the wire in the photo has no kinks? Nick did it right! If you do it wrong and kink the wire, then you must replace it.

Hope this answers your question. Tightlines to all!

    Aloha.
