    Video and camera equipment

    Hello all,

In a couple of years I set off on a 5-7 yr circumnavigation on a 64' trawler I'm having built. During this trip I plan on keeping a website for logs, video, and pics of my journey...or as it's has become know as my 'Big Adventure' to my friends and family.

In the meantime I'm looking into video and camera gear for said documentation...I am interested in being able to vid and take pics above and below the water...as well as finding editing software that is relatively easy to use...I'm not the most computer savvy person...as of yet at least.

I'm looking to spend @ 10 k or so for this equipment, it should also be able to take a little bit of a beating...though I'm pretty careful w/ these things.

Any suggestions you have will be gratefully appreciated.

    Mojo,
I have all my camera gear stowed in a 1550 pelican case. Holds my video camera and my D70 SLR along with a telephoto lens.

Question for you before getting into camera recommendations, is the 10 grand just got this equipment or is it for other things as well. Helps with what we will recommend...

    what Buckeye said

I'd go for a DSLR camera. I have a Canon Rebel XT which is the entry level DSLR but it takes fine pictures for me. I'd also get 2 lenses, a wide angle for those scenic shots and a telephoto for longer reach. IS (image stabilizer) is a nice feature if you won't be using a tripod with those telephoto shots. I believe you can get waterproof housings for these cameras.

My camcorder is waterproof up to 5 feet. I'm not that pleased with it and looking to get a new one, but it takes fine video. The water has to be very clear for any kind of underwater stuff. It's a Sanyo Xacti.

I would suggest you get a video cam and a still cam. Leica makes some very nice smaller cams in the M series. This is a very high quality 8 meg camera and very sturdy. You can get wide angle ot telephote lenses if you want. On the video side I would suggest the canon hv20. Be sure to get a polarizer/UV lens and a wide angler adapter. Ikelite makes a very nice under water housing for this camera. A nice pelican case will hold all cams and accessories. Also, you will need to think about how many hours you plan to shoot and get the appropriate numbers of HDV tapes. I suggest fuji tapes.

I would suggest to send JMiner on the board a PM and let him know your needs. He actually specializes in outfitting boats w/their AV needs and if you've heard anything about the Judge (64 Viking) the video/recording setup on there is amazing!

Good luck on your "Big Adventure"!!!!

The U/W aspect .... are you talking about cameras ( fish cams)to drop overboard or U/W housings for cameras for diving ?

If anyone can point you in the right direction, it would be Jim. As for looking for crew members on this site for your trip, I think you'll have alot of willing able hands!!!
