    Vaccume sealing bait??????

I have been vaccume sealing mullet. Im having a problem. They stay sealed for hours then when I put the bags of bait in the freezer they loose the vaccume. I have a good vaccume sealer I think. It has a setting for a wet seal. I seal each end three times and some still loose the vaccume. Any help or advise would be great.

I have never had to much of a problem with mullet, but a shrimp horn will for sure poke a hole in the bag. Check for the peck fin it maybe poking a hole in the bag - they are sharp and it doen't take but a pin hole.

    What he said.......

I have had the same problem with bait and with fillets that have the pin bones left in.

The quality of the bag may have something to do with it... My usual mate runs with a professional foodsaver and extra heavy duty bags... Me I salt em and stuff em in a commercial type ziplock, suck the air out with a straw and call em done...

I set up I guess about 500 hoos from the keys this year doing that and all seals still tight. The ones still left from last year though for the most part gave up the ghost about mid summer. The food saver does such a good job with fillets I have trouble telling what year stuff I've got at times...

The fin thing is very possible Im going to cut the bags open in the morning and fill them with water to see if I can see where they are leaking. Deep where do you get those extra heavy bags?

    pitch bait,

put bait in the bag un sealed for awhile till they start to freeze then take them out and seal the bag. I do that with fish when I freeze it and it seals better. I had the same problem fron time to time when I froze fish.

The man. reccomend that this is done with "wet" items to prevent liquid from being sucked into the machine but this sometimes causes air pockets, which is what you are trying to avoid.

I have found patting down the excess and then folding about half a paper towel into a 1 inch strip and placing it between the fish and the sealer before hitting the vac works great.

Any moisture that is sucked towards the seal gets absorbed by the towel, and vacuum is nice and tight throughout the bag. Then the towel along with the bait/whatever freezes airtight.

    Had the exact same problem...

    Bobby,
The fins are a pain. I finally started laying them on a cookie sheet with a piece of freezer paper on it to keep them from sticking to pan. Put this in the freezer for a few hours. Then bag and seal them.
I had bad luck putting them in the bags and freezing first because there would always be a little moisture near where the seal will end up. By laying them out flat and starting the freeze process before bagging I have had the best success.
