Turkey Calling with a Diaphram call?????????

Ok I have drawn 2 turkey tags. This is my first time turkey hunting. I bought a pack of diaphram calls the other day and it came with an instructional video. The video shows you what calls to use when and is very informative on that subject but never tells you how to use the call. I cant figure out how to make a noise with the call. All I do is blow spit all over the place and not one peep comes out of the call. I need some help. Im not sure which way to even stick the thing inmy mouth. Im going to be hunting by myself so I was told a mouth call is the only way to go cause I cant move to call then pick up my gun. Thanks in advance.

they take lots and lots of practice and trial and error to learn.....and some people will never get it. i practiced with mouth calls for two years before my turkey hunting mentors even allowed me to carry one in the woods. and i killed many a turkey with slate, box, etc in the meantime. but the mouthcall is deadly once mastered.

i suggest you keep spewing spit all over the place.....you will eventually get it! and by the way, the reed goes towards the front teeth and the call should tuck right in the roof of your mouth.

Less is more when calling, so I wouldn't hesitate to bring a box call along while you learn how to master the diaphragm.

exhale....but, not really! it takes very little air to get those reeds moving. use your toungue pressure to control how much air you send across the reeds

this is one of those things that is damn near impossible to teach or explain....

keep at it! i do suggest you buy a few other types of calls at least for your hunting this season. slates and box calls are basically fool proof. and be prepared to buy a pile of calls before you find one you like. turkey calls are like fishing lures......you own a shitload of them, but only one or two of them are MAGIC.....

Just like holding your tongue against the roof of your mouth and kind of puff, it takes a little practice. You don not puff with your lungs it more like a cough. back in the early 80's I used to drive down the road with the damn diaphragm in my mouth just clucking a way and listen to a cassette tape to try and mimic all the calls.
My wife and her mom got in my car once turned on the stereo and thought that they had fried the stereo cause all that was coming out was a cluck.
Once you get the hang of it you will throw out the rest.

Also, once you get the sound you want, if you cup your hands over your mouth you can make the sound much softer and have better control.
