Tuna vs. quota numbers thru Saturday

Pretty sad if you ask me.................not that anyone did.

Landings of Large Medium and Giant Bluefin to date
As of 1/18/2007 fishing year landings of Atlantic bluefin tuna are as follows: The Coastwide General Category has landed 159.8 mt out of 1163.3 mt to date. The Harpoon category closed at: 22.2 mt. Longline North: 27.8 out of 150.4 mt to date. Longline South: 3.6 mt out of 117.8 mt to date. Purse Seine category closed at 3.6 mt. Landings updates will be made as necessary.

Thought that maybe they would be extending the General Cat to fill quota but no such thing.

I think it means we still have to educate ourselves on these beasts. From some articles I have read, these fish do not adhere to a simple north/south migration and they show up in different locations during different years. When they show up, we catch the hell out of them and the fishery gets shut down. When they do not show up, we scratch our heads and wonder why we didn't catch them.

Right now it seems the fishery is managed by a bunch of people arguing over metric tons of meat on the east/west docks. I am looking forward to the day where we know these fish well enough to know where they will be, manage seasons and bag limits to keep them viable, and know where to go to head them off at the non-annual pass. It seems the Med has a pretty consistent fishery, beside that we don't know much.

I don't fish for them much, I think they taste like crap, and if the Japanese didn't pay so much for them they would probably be a non-issue and one hell of a sportfish. I hope we understand these fish before we yank the last one out of the ocean.
