TROPHY Sportfishing 10/9 Wrightsville Report
sorry its a little late but was waiting on some pictures, maybe they can be posted later.
got a call from mikeLPL monday afternoon....said john was looking for a couple pit guys for tuesday. twist my arm why dont ya?
pulled out of the slip around 5:30 heading towards the 150's. nice ride out, little 3-4 foot swell with a little chop on top.....very fishy looking. john at the helm, mike and i with pit duties and frank as the angler. set the worms out in about 30 fathoms. had one fish boil on the right short, drop back....come tight and pull hook. oh well. about 20 mins later was sitting watching the right short again when i see a sailfish wallering all over it. drop back, nothing...john still sees him behind the right short and after the drop back it put it right beside the right long. just then the right long grabs a chunk of weeds and the dog spooks and fades off.
hour or so later the planer rod trips and we put a decent wahoo in the box. then a slinger mahi on the bridge pole. have another planer bite and the hook pulls at the transom....decent wahoo. one more planer bite and box another wahoo. couple boats around us(the Miss Shell from Topsail, and a CC out of Wrightsville) werent doing a whole lot either. by now its getting close to noon. john had been on the radio with dale britt on the Sensation who was up the beach in the 220's and had found a few fish. we decided to troll that way for a while, and hopefully find a bite in between. the grass got way scattered out and was hell to fish in. john says wind em in and we make an 11 mile jaunt up the beach.
set the mess back out a little short of our destination and its slow for a while still. did we make the right decision in making a move? planer rod trips and another nice wahoo boxed. then a small gaffer and a slinger. from then on we had pretty steady bites. one planer bite and john slows down for frank to crank on the fish. just then a fish airs out on the bridge pole, john drops back, misses it, drop back again and gags his ass. fish is stringing out 16 pounds of drag like freespool. mike sticks the planer fish(mid 50's) while im working on the bridge pole. frank takes over and i grab the gaff, stick him and go to pull him over the gunnel. john said he thought the tail of the fish would never come over. a long, fat slob well into the 60's. we pick up another planer fish, then another fatty on the long rigger, then another on the planer to polish off our limit. pretty work captain.
ended up with 8 wahoos, 3 mahis, 1 king. thanks for the ride john and the opportunity for us to run your cockpit. no complaints, life is good. now lets go do it all over again tomorrow......

You lucky dog!
Would love to get to go as much as you have been lately. Nice work on your wahoos and good choice on the move. Would have loved to see you sling that monster hoo over the gunnel.
Sorry I have not returned your call, I have been slammed and completely covered up here at work. I actually got a ride next week just before you called. Thank you for keeping me in mind bubba.

Pretty work captain John and crew. A limit of wahoos will please any day! Leaving (some) fish to find (more) fish is what great captains do with confidence.
