    Trolling on the Causeway

The weather was great Friday and we got a report late that evening that one of the Captains on Lake Pontchartrain was catching some nice trout slow trolling jigs on the Causeway. The Causeway is or was the worlds largest bridge. it runs across the middle of the lake from New Orleans, on the south shore, to Mandeville on the north shore.

So my buddy Josh and I devise a plan to go Saturday morning. I am at a baseball game and know we are going to go eat afterwords. Reel Fun has not been in the water since August and is full of leaves and dust. i know it is going to be a long night trying to get her ready to go.

we make it to the landing at daylight back her down and the battery clicks i knew that battery was going to be iffy. i didnt get it on the charger soon enough. We jumped it off with one of the trolling motor batteries and we were off.

We get between the bridges and start trolling with the big motor but we are going close to 4 mph. so i said no problem, we will use the trolling motor. i put her down and look down in the water and i can count the revolutions of the prop. not good. those batteries had been on charge of on for weeks. have some issues there i have to get ironed out.

back to the big motor......click...dig the jumper cables out again. one trolling motor battery....click. i tell Josh we can use 24 volts or we are going to have to call your captain friend to tow us back. I show him which post to clip it to.......whizzzzzz broooom. we are trolling again.

we put out the drift sock to slow us down to under 2 mph....not long after that we boat the first trout. ended up with 7 nice ones before we had to leave to make it to Alden's 1pm game.

the coolest thing about the day.......after the game i dropped Alden and the boat off at home and went to meet some freinds and libby for food and drinks. when we got home at about 6:30 pm. the fish box was leaning against the trailer. Alden had filleted the trout and washed out the fish box. oh and he went 3 for 3 with two rbi and threw out a runner at second. but they lost to their arch rivals, Bethany Christian. that is a interesting story that i will have to get up in another post.
