Tripping a handline planer?
I figured I would post this question in the forum of the planer Jedi himself. We have been having success trolling a handline planer off the transom for Wahoo but the problem is when we get fish on, or a fish on any set-up the handline planer needs to be cleared. Since we keep the boat moving forward at all times during the fight it is damn near impossible to trip the planer so that it is easy to pull in. If we leave it out we risk loosing a fish in the planer line.
So does anyone have any idea on what I could do? Leave extra line in the boat and let it all out to slack up on the planer so it trips?
Thanks!

Try putting a 6' piece of 3/8 or 1/2 inch rope with a brass ring spliced in each end where the planner hooks to the boat. The larger diameter rope is not so hard on your hands when you are trying to break the planer.

I think Admin is going to let me have this space
Edit: Guy above beat me to it.
Get a 3-5 foot length of rope and cleat it. Put a ring on the end of the rope. Crimp your mono that is attached the planer rig to the ring.
Put the lines out and let the planer set like you normally do. When the rubber band breaks, fish on etc. Reach out and grab the ring or the rope pull up and back in a slow motion and let it go quickly. This will trip the planer. I have found the old salty's trip better than any other planer.
There is a video here the guys were doing on the old Run Off that shows Marty tripping like we are describing. I will see if I can find it.

Hi,
Tripping an "Old Salty Planer" with Hand-Line
You want to add a 6-8ft. 3/8 or 1/2in. pc. of rope to the end of your hand-line with a loop at the end. Before putting the loop on, if you're using the 3/8 rope slide an old lawn mower pull handle onto the rope 3ft. down to a knot you tied in the rope before adding the handle. Then tie an additional knot in rope after the handle is installed.
Handle is then secure. Then put a loop at the end of the hand-line tieing a knot. This will allow you to easily attatch the Planer to your cleat or pad eye on the stern of the boat.
To trip the "Old Salty Planer" for easy retreival, grab a hold of the handle/or rope pull back tight then let go of the rope quickly. This will trip an "Old Salty Planer" everytime for fast and easy retreival.
This is not the only way, but I feel it is very effective.

Hand rigged planer?
Does anyone use a handline downrigger (Old Salty planer)?
From what I can tell it should be cleated off when deployed.
I am thinking about picking up two of these to try out in the spring. I do not have room for a downrigger on my boat and this seems like a good way to accompllish the same thing.
What size is recommended? I do not want to use it "in line" but would rather use it in the same manner as a downrigger with a release clip.
I would be fishing for stripers in the ocean from 30-50 feet.
Any sugesstions on size/weight and setup would be greatly appreciated.

They use hand down riggers in mexico all the time. A 100 foot piece of string/rope, and a downrigger ball or a brick haha. And they do work. However, can be a big pain

I was talking abou the Old Salty planer.
Sorry if I was not clear.
From what I understand these can be used on a rod or handlined.
Any sugesstions or advice?

The key to making your planer trip easier is to put a very, very, very small bend in the main wire. Takes all the work out of it and still holds even with a large bait behind it.

How would you set it up if you were planning on using a storm swim shad or a eel tube in 30-50 foot of water and did not want the planer on the main line?
Which planer would you recommend for this depth?
Thank you for the tip Sea Draggin.
