    Tried Something New....

Saturday rolled around and with the warm water finally in reach of the beach, I tried something new... Nope, no witch, no spreader bars, not even a rod and reel. Instead it was a wet suit some weights a pole spear and a big ass pair of fins. Picked up a couple of new friends and headed out to Fenwick shoals for a day of freediving and spear fishing. First stop had us over a wreck in 20 ft of water. Visability was real poor (4-5') or so. The current was running pretty good and off we went. I had never done any thing close to this... Some snorkling trips in shallow water, but never 8 miles offshore in a current with limited visablity. On my third dive, I was returning to the surface and school of spade fish streaked past my face. With out thinking about it, I let the pole spear fly and YES SIR... Nice spade straight through the gills. My first aquatic kill! It took me awhile to figure the tog out. I was seeing them, but only the stinky end as they vanished out of my view. While I was struggling, my two partners in crime where putting on a clinic and the stringers filled with a nice grade of Taug.

After a couple hours at location A we moved off to some deeper water. We achored up on another wreck in 30-35 ft of water. I'd never been this deep on my own lungs and was quite unsure if I was even going to see the bottom... I surprised myself. Not only could I get there, I could hang out there for a bit. The wreck had lots more relief than the previous one and I captiolized. Played a little hide and seek with the tog and delt some death with a pointy stick... I loved it. Managed to spear a few for the dinner table!

All I can say about that trip is WOW. Had a ball doing something I've never done before. I believe that I am hooked! Can't wait to hit them again next sunday after our saturday tuna run. Nothing better than getting up close and personal with you dinner. Its a lot of fun hand picking them!

Chilli is back with a vengeance! Good to see you posting again man. Spear fishing is a blast, especially free diving. When I was young & strong I did my share in the clear waters of Greece, but not much life there. Still try it in the summers when I visit.
You are right about being hooked. Nothing like being with fish in their world.

    Man,

You have gotta love those shallow wrecks. When scuba diving, I always thought it was cool when the current would pick you up move you 5-10 feet and set ya down only to go back the other way. Fenwick shoals used to get a good population of triggers in the late summer. Build those lungs up and I can give you a set of numbers for a wreck not far from there that you can free dive for lobsters in 55 feet of water (at least they were there 10 years ago).

I've been fishing Fenwick shoals for over 20 years. I know both of those wrecks very well. I got in the habit of floating a shark bait on a ballon whenever I was wreck fishing. One time I hooked up with a shark that half spooled my 50 TW before it just snapped. Keep your eyes open on Fenwick. There are some big sharks in that area.
