SO TUNACHASER:
Its Marty, the guy in the bass show,
So, Here is my opinion on TRED...
I had been into real serious Surf Fishing for the past 25-years. THen I got a boat in 1993 and started pursing bass in the boat. For a few years with the boat bass fishing I finally wanted to get into the offshore & tuna fishing by myself. SO I started reading lots of books, I saw his book "The Best & Worst of Tred Barta" in a tackle shop and bought it and started reading it, then again, and again and again...Well, I really knew absolutely nothing about tuna and offshore fishing. His book seemed very informative and at time a little crazy.
I liked that he hunted and that it showed that he had caught a hell of a lot of real big tuna. Like myself in surf fishing, I tried to be the best, but me and my fishing partner AL were real secrative and rarely told or gave any information to anyone. But, here Tred was spilling the beans. I was a ne father and thought that in the boat, the offshore grounds are so friggin big that its cool to share and then be shared with on all the information.
So, I wrote the guy a 6-page letter in 2000, tracked down where he lived and sent the letter. A week later, it came back "Undeliverable". Then I found another address for him and resent it, after a few weeks, I sitting at my desk and my assistant, calls me and says "Theres a Captain Tred Barta on the phone for you, Do you want to tell to him?"
I grab the phone and say "Marty speaking!" BOOM! This thundering voice comes over the ear piece.."Hello!, This is Captian Tred Barta!, So you want to go tuna fishing!, "YES SIR!, We speak breifly for a minute, then he says,
"Ok!, I'll be calling you in a couple of weeks, When I say to be at the boat, be there and don't be late! I don't wait for anyone! See ya! CLICK!
What a Madman! Three weeks later on a Wednsday at 9:10AM, I am at work, and here it comes, my assistant says its that guy again...I pick up the phone and I say hello..."Hi, its Tred Barta, I am going offshore to the canyon for a couple of days, be at the boat 2PM. Bring x,y,z and don't be late! CLIKCK!
I told my partner, I gotta go, see ya in a couple of days...Drove like a madman from Westbury to Montauk to my boat to get my gear, and turn around and get back to Shinnecock while getting all the food and stuff on the list he had rattled off. I got there with minutes to spare, the engines were running the ice was getting delivered to the boat, "Hi Tred!"
BOOM! "Get on the boat and get this Ice loaded we gotta get going!" Yes sir, minutes later the lines were on the dock and off we went.
My first canyon trip, we started at THE TAILS, he sees a Swordfish on the surface, yells out a bunch of commands I don't understand but try to follow... he baits the sword but it sounds on the try. WOW, minutes later reels are screaming...tunas hitting thre deck...I AM IN HEAVIN" it now getting dark and he say, ok the MAD HATTER is in West Atlantis, well go ther for the night, off we go 30+ miles and are running in the dark s we arrive. He rigs up two big 80s on bent butts and drops some big rigged squids down and says you watch these, if they start screaming call me! I am going to bed, He was in bed and asleep.
I watched those rods all night, I looked at my first tunas and just couldnt beleive my luck to be here 110 miles offshore with this madman! WOW! 3AM the guys up in the cockpit, I am use to staying up all night and he said how much sleep did you get...I was JACKEd and didnt get any sleep! I ask..."what are we going to do now". He get on the radio and call Jimmy Hummel on the MAD HATTER, ,"Jim whats going on?" Reply-Got something big on! How long you been on that fish? Jimmy replies, "Its the third hour of the monster battle with something big!"
WOW! pinch me and I dreaming, well the sun comes up and we get a bigeye bite, and I loose it, then we get some more yellowfins and albies, mahi mahis, skipjacks, etc., etc., etc., In the afternoon we start heading for the barn and spot a 600lb+ Mako sunning on the surface, Tred gets me to drop in and lead a wire line giant rigged squid, put it on a outrigger and lead the fish with it, three passes later I was able to practically hit the things nise with the bait with out him eating and then he sounds....WOW! WOW! WOW!
I can't even tell you the feeling I had... twenty miles later we see another 200+ mako, we get just one pass on him and he eats the bait, I blow the hook set and its over... I am so f&^King JACKED I can't hardly hear because my heart is thmping so loud!
10-mile later we see a huge pod of 300-6000lb BFTpushing water and all of a sudden I was putting the entire spread out and waiting for the fight of my life to begin. The a second pod, third, forth, fifth of these behemoths breaking water, WOW!
Tred friggin worked these fish for two hours like a possessed man! he tried everything...I never saw anyone fish like this but me and my couple of close surf fishing buddies....I like this GUY!
WORLD CLASS TRIP!, World class guy, great freind, generous, giving and INTENSE!!! I fished with him every weekend for nearly four years, and my 10-year old son COdy on his madden offshore trip goes right to East Atlantis and we get mugged by a Big Eye, then another, then another, then another
,till SIX are on! All on 30's ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ...snap, one spooled, ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, SNAP 2 spooled, me, Hunter, Cody are all on fishZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, SNAP, that three empty spools!
I drop my fish, Hunter brings his fish to the boat, Tred wires the fish, i gaff, One in the boat,,,,,cody gets his leader to the rod , Tred grabs and wires the bruser up to me I blow the gaff and we loose the fish...
I hunted in British Columbia with him and I took a Pope and Yound Velvet covered Moose with my recurve, he took another small bull and then that night his wife is on the satellite phone and tells him she wants a divorce....THAT SUCKED!!! in fact, the remaining five days were hell!
Tred was and is not always easy to deal with! I had to take a two year break from him at the same time he got his show going and that was great.
The man wanted and does make a show unlike anything else on the market...For me and probably for many others, its great that its not like the Orlando Wilson show or any other show on TV. He does funny, or stupid or serious or intense or goofy things, but he does entertain one way of another. I think he could make them more educatonal while still keeping some humor in them. But, its his show, not mine or yours>>>
He fights hard to do for kids, yet its very, very hard for him to relate to kids the way he could...he's wound up and super impatient...but he is passionate and love to do what he does.
And I wouldn't trade my friendship for anything in the world...even if it can be impossible to bear at times...He now introduces me as "This is my freind Marty McMillan, he left me as a freind for two years but hes back now, well at least for a while till he leaves me again" I just look at him and laugh! Oh well that's TRED...
He has done a lot, works hard for the kids and IGFA, is a generous, self-made man, and would get between you and a charging grizzly if it happened.
The bottom line is, Love Him or Hate him he is Tred!
And he's my dear freind! Marty
