We left the dock around 3:30 Thurs afternoon. We knew that we were going to have a bumpy ride out to the deep but decided to give it a shot anyway.
6 hours later we finally arrived at the Toms canyon and ran right to the deep to drift for the night. It was a pretty nasty night out there.
We had one hook up on the deep sword rod but the lever went in the wrong directionwhich resulted in a big old birds nest…. SNAP!!!! So much for that fish…
The rest of the night was pretty slow except for the occasional squid that came thru to help keep us awake.
Up on the troll at first light… there were only a few boats fishing as the weather was pretty tough thru the night and was still a bit snotty in the morning. We worked the tip area for awhile and found our one and only Mahi…. We saw the new Canyon Runner out there working the same area…. Wow!!! What a great looking boat!
After covering the area pretty well with nothing but the Mahi… we decided to run to the deep to see if that could change our luck. We got into the south Toms and that’s where whitey came to visit… after some quick pictures…. Off she went.
We worked over that area for awhile and heard on the radio of a nice Blue being caught and a few whites being raised with a couple being released.
As we were heading back up to the tip area we watched as our bars were getting boils all over them but nothing was sticking…. Speed up….. Slow down…. Turn…. Finally they stuck…
Ended up being two nice size long fin which made their way into the box.
We worked the same area for an hour or so but couldn’t find any more… so we decided to head back towards home and see if we could come up with a BFT on the way in. We set up with the fleet just south of the Glory hole and spent an hour or so trying but we couldn’t get anything to bite.
With the wind laying down and the sea flat as a lake (what a difference a couple of hours can make) We ran for the barn.
The Mahi hit a naked ballyhoo, the marlin was on a ballyhoo with a blue and white sea witch, and the tuna were on an Archer bar and a chugger with a ballyhoo. The tuna didn’t have anything in their stomach.
All in all another great trip with some good friends… it doesn’t get any better than that.
