This weekend I took advantage of the nice weather here in the NE and explored Philadelphia a little bit. I have driven thru the city a million times but never took the time to do the tourist stuff. Here is a little tour.
First stop was Penns Landing
This the Ben Franklin bridge that connects Philly to beautifull downtown Camden, New Jersey.
Next is the Battleship New Jersey. It was built at the Philadelphia Naval Ship Yard and launched on Dec 7th 1942 and was decommisioned on Feb 8th 1991
Next we have the USS Olympia and USS Becuna.
The Cruiser USS Olympia was commissioned on Feb 5th 1895. It was from her deck that Commodore George Dewey spoke the famous words "You may fire when ready, Gridley". In October-November 1921, she brought home the body of the "Great War's" Unknown Soldier
The Submarine USS Becuna was launched January 30th 1944 and arrived at Pearl Harbor July 29th 1944. Her war operations extended from August 23rd 1944 to July 27th 1945. During this period she completed five war patrols in the Philippines, South China Sea, and Java Sea. Becuna is credited with having sunk two Japanese tankers
Class please tune in later for part 2 of your history lesson because now I have to go cook dinner.![]()
