Im not a rich guy like most of us who own boats thats why I try to get the most out of every offshore fishing trip I can..I like to think that Ive been very consistant & thats inpart to me doing my homework...I work very hard to support family , pay my bills , & last but not least to go fishing..So I do my homework days before I go fishing...When I pick a possiable day to go The studying begins...What do I mean well I study ,I network, I call freinds, I call Capts., I read reports, I check the weather patterns , I study sst shots ,& I might go down to the dock to see what was caught on what pattern & location..These are all things I do before every single trip...Why be that guy you know the one who calls a few freinds & says lets go fishing..They pick a day & time to leave...He goes & gets his ballyhoo from boaters world they get up early In the am toss the bait & bucket of water on the way to the ramp... They have know idea where to head Or where The bite Is & the just follow everyone out Or go out blind...When they get to a spot they think Is good they break out the rods wich have been sitting In the cabin all year same line from last season they rig a few hoos & put them out to troll for hrs with no luck.. Then they pack It up about noon because they havent caught a fish & they go home...WHY........It dosnt have to be like that If you do your homework....
A few things to try & do this year...
#1 Networking It can be your best freind when It comes to fishing..Ive made alot of freinds off the internet & from fishing...So use that call them get a report or see what they have heard...
#2 Get a good sst service..Ive had one for a few years now & love It gives me sst, salinity, color changes, & most important bait consentrations & upwellings...They tell me where the best upwellings are along with the currents & where the best locations are for bait consentrations...Well worth the $$$...
#3 Check the internet reports..THis has been an awesome tool for me & everyone...Not only do you get private reports but reports from the guys who do this for a living every day...
#4 Check weather patterns..Keep an eye out for moon phases approaching fronts, high pressure & low pressure systems...
#5 Go to the dock make freinds talk to mates & capts..See what was caught..Find out where they caught It & on what pattern...
So In closing dont waste your hard earned $$$ make It bennifit you & your crew by doing your homework....!
Man you got that right. Its a second job. It starts on monday for me for a saturday trip. I only get in 15-20 offshore trips a year so I want to make the most of each trip. cant stress the SST sites enough. There are free ones out there but why not get one that gives all the info. I mark the break lines on the sst chart and follow the temps during the week on that break. has paid off for us. most are 150.00 or so for the year. $$ well spent. I couldnt imagine doing it without those
I use Hiltons.....They give you so much info & they are go all year....I also like oceantemps but they dont have as much info & are seasonal...
Call Tom at Hiltons he will take the time to explain everything to ya real nice guy...
well put cappy,,,, i spend only about 12 day's a season in the Canyons and every trip has to count it's a long ride for us around 100 miles for us up north
i fish 2-3 tourney's and with out the network it would be a long ride home
I depend on others for there reportds as well as trying to give back with as much details as i can .i use oceantemps for following the stream and eddies all week long and the day or night before pull a roffers and compare notes
with the advent of sattelite phones networking on the water has become fairly easy when out of radio range ............
I used OceanTemps last season but may try something different this season just for the sake of comparison. I like the idea of using a less expensive service such as OCeantemps or Hiltons to follow the trend and then pull a Roffer's report the day of the trip.
