Another great tip Jimmy! Can you go more in depth about how you use the upwellings to aid in your decision to go to a particular area? In other words, do you consider it a more important factor than the temp break or water color?

Sure thing Jr...I wouldnt say it more important then temp breaks or temps but just as important...It will make my mind up on a starting local & has been an awesome tool for me...

below is a pic of an altimetry shot or upwelling shot...this one is of NC it donst show the waypoints or fathoms lines unless youare a member so I cant show you that shot...Now notice In the middle where the blue comes In to a bottle neck that Is over 1250 rocks now that combined with a temp break would be where I would start for sure..they way It works Is deep blue Is the best & red Is avoid at all cost...so anything blue or green Is good blue being number one...Now the other cool thing about this Is you can loop the images & see witch way Its moving & the same goes for the temp shot....

I wrote this in Febuary of last year in a Post called Canyon Fishing With Pitch Bait Bobby. It is great to see that great minds think alike. I had to cut and paste since i dont know if you can quote things from another thread.

    Lets talk about preperation

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is alot more to being prepared than having a gaff on board when you are offshore fishing. For me preperation starts days before my trip. One main factor to being prepared is communication. If you are a so called "Weekend Warrior" it is paramount that you have communication with local charter boats. If you are fishing on Saturday, Wensday you should begin making phone calls. By Friday you should know what temp the fish started in and where they ended up, the time of the bite, where the bite started and ended. Information like this is hard to come by, but if you are in the network its not. Now by the time Friday comes you are way ahead of the rest of the weekend fleet. Remember they have given you info, and invited you to come fish along side them, but give them space to work. Also they have shared the info with you so feel privledged, dont bring a convoy of your buddies. Maybe when you are catching, call a local charter boat and let him know where you are and what you are doing. Make yourself known with out bragging and being a pest. Soon you will develope a relationship and more favors will come your way. Every night do my so called "homework." If I didnt fish, I walk the docks, talk to the local mates and captains, see what they caught and what they have seen. Local knowledge is better than any rigged ballyhoo or lure on the market, the prettyest lure or freshest bait can not catch a fish if there arent any fish there to be caught. Part of my home work also is watching the sattelite temp shots on the computer. I track the leading edges of the break, I as far south as Florida. Every day at the same time I find the leading edge and I know how fast, how far, and in what general direction its moving. When it hits South Carolina I start my phone calls south. "Hey Wahoo there is some water moving your way" Wahoo says " Yea had a good marlin bite on the edge in 500 fathoms lots of bait and clean water." "Oh,ok keep me posted." Then from there I call my Hatteras buddies tell them "hey there is good water moving your way let me know if you do anything in it" and I track it up the coast. Some of you guys are saying Im nuts, but guess what to me its worth it. Most of the time they already know its coming but if not they appreciate the phone call. Its networking, to be sucessfull and consistant you have to start preparing long before you get to the boat. There is a whole lot more to it than taking the lines off and dragging bait around. Remember this is strictly my opnion.

Great info posted above. For us living up north a 90 + mile poke is about standard to get into the good stuff. With the price of fuel and all the other stuff we all spend our hard earned money on proper planning and recon is priceless.

    WAHOO & JIMMYK

It might be worth it to put together a list of our memebers with names, phone #'s, cell# and our fishing areas to even help us network better.

    Another great tip Jimmy.
