    Tip of the week #23

    Tip of the week #23
This one is for the BOX. Special thanks to Otis.
Slocumb Rig...The rig itself. You will need a #2 treble. A 3/8" spring. 60# barrel swivel. 50# mono from the hook to the barrel swivel.
    Tip of the week #23-sta70256.jpg
The rig is connected to a dropper loop on 100# or 80# mono. A double overhand knot is used to make a loop which is a foot or so above a dropper which is between 8" to 20" above another double overhand knot which makes the weight loop. The first loop mentioned is to tie the main line. The slocumb rig attatches to the dropper loop via the barrel swivel.

Now for the most important part! THE SLOCUMB! YOU MUST HAVE LIVE BLUE CRABS! CLEAN SOOKS ARE A MUST. JIMMIES DO NOT WORK. SPONGES DO NOT WORK. CLEAN SOOKS ONLY!
    Tip of the week #23-sta70245.jpg
    She is a pretty one.
Start by breaking off the crabs claws. Fold back her apron.
Between thumb and forefinger grab four legs. With other hand grab adjacent point on claw and seperate upper shell from the rest very carefully.
    Tip of the week #23-sta70247.jpg
Take a short stiff knife and cut the face of the crab off like the picture below.
    Tip of the week #23-sta70250.jpg
Lifting the knife up against the top of the shell push the knife point down into the point of the crab shell. Then turn the knife and scrape out one side. Turn and do the same on other point. TBC....

    Continued...
    Tip of the week #23-sta70251.jpg
Now scrape all the way out real carefully. If done carefully it will look like this.
    Tip of the week #23-sta70255.jpg
Now insert one of the trebles in one end like so...
    Tip of the week #23-sta70258.jpg
Gently wrap the slocumb around the treble carefully compressing it into the spring.
    Tip of the week #23-sta70259.jpg
The finished weapon will look like this...
    Tip of the week #23-sta70260.jpg
Using a braided line equipped rod with LOTS of lead. SLOWLY, CAREFULLY, LOWER this to the bottom. If you drop it fast it will wash off! This rig works very well when it is held still as soon as it hits the bottom. If it rolls around it will hang or wash off. In the words of OTIS,"The tog loves Slocumb like Peter loved the LORD!"

    Marty,
Are you saying there are tog in your neck of the woods in the winter?
I grew up Togging and miss it almost as much as my Momma. Down this way toward Wilmington there isn't a great number of them and I'd love to be able to hang a few now and again. Maybe it'd save me a trip or four back to Jersey in the dang winter to catch these things. It'd also give me another reason to go fishing with my new nefew.
