When slow trolling live bait for kings or big spanish (the absolute most horrid way to spend a hot summer day) you hear people complain that they can't troll slow enough. Consequently you'll see them attempt various things in an effort to slow the boat down. They'll buy expensive rigs that mount to their engines to block the prop thrust, they'll pull sea anchors, they'll bump the engine in and out of gear (potentially ruining their transmissions in the process), and you even see some guys tying ropes to 5 gallon buckets and tossing them over...all in an effort to slow down.
Does no one have a trim motor on their engine?
If you're trolling too fast at idle, just trim the engine up. As long as it's still pee'ing you're alright. The higher you trim it the less forward thrust you'll achieve. An added benefit is that as you trim the engine you'll start throwing water above the surface. Just like the Cap above said about chunking at night and spraying the water hose in the air to attract tunas you'll be doing the same thing with your engine. Trim that baby up, slow your troll, and cause a white wash of water at the tail of your boat...it'll look like a feeding frenzy for sure!

My Tip
This is not to start a website war, but go to FRYINGPANTOWER.COM
Capt. Dave has put together a SUPER BLUEWATERMAP it does all the things a pay site does plus many more. (SST, waypoints, chlorophyll, weather, oh yeah and REEFCAST no need to check weather anymore just check reefcast.
Oh yeah and it's all freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Donations Accepted!!!!!![]()
fish inshore to hide from $4/gal fuel prices![]()
Respectfully disagree with that one. I trim the motor up on my engines all the time, but it's not to create more whitewash. It's actually to shorten the trail of the whitewash. If you do this correctly, you can really clean up the water behind an outboard boat. I fish a catamaran so it's especially important for me to do since the wash is much wider.
And I agree with you fully! You said what I MEANT to say, actually. The white wash I was referring to will be a small wash of splashing water right at the tail of the boat...not the typical white wash trail we see when trolling at faster speeds. When you trim the engine up you'll actually do away with that wash trail and be left with clean water just a few feet behind the boat, but you'll also have a frenzy of water action right off your stern...should look like fish feeding on a bait ball from below.
You said what I was thinking...thanks!

Ever left bait in a cooler for a few weeks? Ever had a freezer full of fish go out?
wash it out the best you can and then pour dry coffee inside and close it up for a week or 2. It takes all the fish smell out! Smells like starbucks for a while though...![]()
