I grew up in Hawaii where the tilapia was considered a trash fish only good for crab bait. I remember going to Lake Wilson in Wahiawa and seeing thousands of tilapia below the sewer treatment discharge. They were so thick and so bunched together that you could just about walk across them. Now I hear the fishing guides use the baby tilapia for Peacock Bass bait. It's amazing what kind of polluted water the tilapia can thrive in. These fish are so hardy that I have actually seen them in saltwater. I think they got used to brackish water, then made the transition. They were brought in to Hawaii from Africa to control the weeds and grass that grew in the lakes and reservoirs. Now, they have invaded just about every fresh water body of water including streams and rivers. I guess I grew up with a bad stigma associated with tilapia. And that is why I just say "no" to tilapia.
