I need a little input from you Northern boys. I've been researching the Thresher Shark, it's diet, habitat etc.. for a painting I'm going to be doing. Any input from you all as to baits, your experiences while you have been fishing for them and even what you would like to see in the painting. I have to admit a Mako is a hell of alot prettier (if a shark can be pretty in a teethy sort of way). Thanks
One the best sites I have seen while shark fishing was during the 2007 Oak Bluffs Tournament we were on our way to the grounds when we saw a school of Bluefish absolutely going crazy. BIG blues being tossed everywhere by these huge long tails. There were probably 4 Threshers just smacking a school of bluefish which are a mainstay of their diet
Unfortunately they were smaller threshers and close to shore but seeing bluefish being cut in half by their tails and flying backwards in the air was insane
Mark,
I have seen large threshers air born close up twice. Both times I remember being dumbfounded by two things: First, the power of this fish, being able to propel itself 20+ feet straight up like a SAM launched out of a submarine! The other was that deep purple color on the fish's upper side. magnificent against a cool day's bright sun.
Good luck doing that great fish justice.

I've only caught 4. Three of them this year.
All three this year were caught on the bottom
on bluefish filets.
Not hits on the higher baits.
We realized the first one was on when he came out of the water abou 10' off the stern. He grabbed the bait and came straight up. That got the blood pumpin. Heres one of em.
