For those who bottom fish snapper and grouper...

Do you use mono or power pro? I have not used mono in years, and today a buddy told me that you won't get bites (not as many at least) on braid. Should I re-rig my arsenal?

I'm no expert but I like to use braid with a 20' "shock leader" of flouro at the end just for that reason. Unless your deep with bad current mono's fine though.

I have fished with both and I wouldn't leave the dock to go grouper fishing without braid on my rods. It has no stretch so you can pull them off the rocks alot quicker not to mention you can feel the bite better. I can see no disadvantage for any kind of bottom fishing using braid, IMO.

That would explain why we never catch any goobers since switching to braid 5 years ago !
Brother Slip, strip all the reels and let's go with camo mono. That should do it!

Seriously, I believe that braid, although more visible than mono, more than makes up the difference in sensitivity when bottom fishing. I use braid exclusively.
    Good luck,

I agree with all the comments about braid, and have been using it for years. The only reason I say this is a buddy said they were bottom fishing for yellow-tails (80-95ft) and he could not get a bite, while another guy fished with mono and was killing them. All other variables the same he is convinced the braid has some flare that makes it less effective. He was using a 2-3 foot flouro liter. He thinks this holds true for grouper also. Just curious if anyone had experienced this.

I think it really makes a difference if the fish have been pressured hard(especially snapper), other than that it doesn't matter.

Sometimes YT's won't even bite 6# flouro with a burried bait hook, so... what can you do
