Those NC Fish have terrible manors!
Had in interesting day today... North Carolina, anchored up over the Indra. She's about 40-45' to the deck and 65' to the sand. Vis was 25-30. I was breaking the rules today and free diving solo. Kimi was topside, holding down the boat for me. I made a few dives. No current and I was feeling good. Stuck a couple nice sized spanish on the way back up, but I had seen nothing other than bait on the wreck. As I reloaded from my last spanish, I notice a circle of cudas spiraling around me about twenty feet down. No worrys. As I dumped my heart rate from my last dive, I watched the cudas swim round and round.... Suddenly the circle o cuda's doubled its diameter instantly. I started wondering why? I immediately found out. Straight up the tube o' cuda's came the tax man. Barely visable at first and closing fast and purposefully straight from the bottom. Bull shark to be sure. He spead twards me at an alarming pace. Peck fins drops low.... Shit... It was then that I noticed that the bull had and dang nice cobia under his belly (yes, I am sure it wasn't a remora... It was a cobia)... As the shark closed the gap rapidly, I contemplated a shot on mr. brown suit. I figured I might want the spear for "other purposes" shortly so I held off. The shark and the cobia where on me. I put the tip of the spear on the bulls nose and pressed it home. He kept comming up. He lifted me out of the water to the bottoms of my shoulder blades and turned away. He came back in shortly with the cobia still in tow. As he closed to within a couple of feet I prodded him, this time below the eye with the tip of the spear... Damn this 80cm gun!!!! I was wishing I had a waterproof remington. The sting below the eye sent the taxman back to the depths. His brown buddy hung in the water for just a second, perfectly broadside, range 4 ft.............. I didn't have the nuts to take the shot. I stood down, kept my shaft resting in the gun and retreated to the boat... I have to say, that was the rudest fish I have ever crossed paths with. Don't you guys down in there teach your sharks any manors? Up here in MD, they swim around lazily, generally ignoring you. Perhaps they'll steal a fish or two from ya, its a small price to pay. Those damn carolina sharks... We'll they'll just plain ruin your day! I'm still scraping the shit out of my wetsuit!

very very scary. glad you're ok. My buddy had a 8' shark come at him last month when we were diving the Raritan (30 miles out of Southport, NC). It came right at him and he had to poke it in the nose with his spear and it took off. (I didn't see it but the guys that did didn't know what kind it was) That's 2 close calls in about a month....hmmm maybe I'll take a little time off from diving....
