i spool mono and braids everyday, you can spool mono so tight you will bust the spool but you can only pack the braid or spectra so tight on the winding machine. its still going to be a little loose or soft on the spool , if someone knows of a way to spool it tighter i would like to know also.

water in a five gallon bucket, two pairs of welding gloves and two men. neatly coil your braid in the bucket and have one man don the welding gloves, he needs to double them up on his hands, interlace the braid in his fingers and have the other guy winding while one is holding tension and leveling the spool. this is called wet-packing.

I spool mine by hand. I have this homemade set-up which is a piece of threaded stock mounted with cones that screws into either side (its a take off on the old wonder winder) I can adjust the tension and I put on a harness and crank it on using a drill.
