    Target Species....Cobia

My wife and I basically got skunked on Friday bottom fishing, it's bad when you can't catch a BSB big enough to eat. We tried several of our favorite places out of Bogue and it wasn't happening. Saturday we decided to go after cobia. We caught a few pogies after a bunch of throws with a 12ft net, they were SCATTERED. We went on to our spot anchoring up at the crack of 10:30 AM. We put out a spread of pogies and the blue fish and sharks made short work of them. We foul hooked a couple blues and redeployed them. Within a few minutes, we had a huge cobia right beside the boat, but he refused all offerings. He hung around maybe 10 minutes, making several appreances but would not eat. The next one we saw engulfed a bluefish I let him run about 50 yds and the went to set the hook and the line broke. 50# braid must have had a nick in it somewhere. We caught lots of sharks on the pogies so my wife started blue fishing and did very well, catching at least a dozen or so. About 2:00, one of the rods on the bottom started clicking and the fight was on. He went under anchor rope two times before we could clear lines and ditch the anchor. My wife did an excellent job driving the boat and after nearly 45 mins, gaffing the 66 lber. We saw 3 more after that, pulled the hooks on one but did not connect. The later it got, the more sharks showed up. We caught several small hammer heads, but no more cobia.
