Well with Baywolf set to head south today to slay groupers, myself and E40 piled in with some guys aboard the Z-Man and decided to kill some too. Well things got of to a slow start, tried catching livebait around the MHC waterfront and port wall, plenty of little BSB. Let's ride plenty of sardines, pogeys and squid on ice, surely we'll fill the boat, yea right!
We decided to start on the #'s I fished last week hoping to pick up some more triggers and possible gags. Well we realized we were in for a heck of a ride back in if the NE wind didn't lay down. First mark was stacked with fish, Phil snagged a very nice BSB, plenty of trash fish to go around. Next spot Jason sent the whole pogey down which was promptly cut in to, whoa! Picked up several more good BSB then Phil flopped a good trigger in the box, we added a couple big grunts also. There was very little current but the wind was pretty stout all day. With several possible grouper bites that pulled off we decided to head for the Reds. After a couple miles of stacked chop and swells it was time to rethink the plan. Roughly 17 more miles before we got on the #'s or head back inshore and try some more gag#'s. Inshore was looking pretty good. This spot 5 BSB, 1 trigger, 3 grunts and several grouper misses.
This was the start of the end of our already miserable day! The starboard engine overheated then cut off and would barely run, great blown powerhead, darn black motors
We are looking at 34 miles back to BI on one motor at around 5 mph into a stacked head sea, well lets get the hoos and weenies out and fish in. 6 1/2 hours, 4 peanuts, 1 short king and several bite offs later we arrived at the ramp. 2 peanuts were caught between R6 and R8 on the edge of the green water on the weenie.
I can honestly say I don't think any of us enjoyed the trip, but we bonded and caught a few fish and took one heck of a butt kicking.
Below Phil showing off one of the "bonding" peanuts
Roger, that picture might be as bad as that one from a few years ago of me holding that gray trout that attacked the big stretch!!! Glad ya'll made it back alright and better days will come.
Funny you mention that pic Mark, found it on a flash drive the other day, might post it for a good laugh . It was pretty stout for the small boat guys, little less wind and we could have loaded up. Turned out not to be the powerhead, fuel problem. Ended up dragging baits all the way into the Turning Basin before calling it a day
