    Taking the kids to OI

I'm pullin my Mako down to Oregon Inlet next weekend, fishing Sat April 2nd. My crew consists of 3 - 12 year old boys and a sales guy with fly experience but no offshore. SO.... needless to say I'll be doing all the work.

How is the Mahi fishing down there, I see Bluefin are hot but I don't have the crew for them, - I'll check the SST and gulf but I was looking for advice on where has been good fishing are they around and decent size? I just want the boys to catch some maihi and a stray yellowtail would be awesome.

    Thoughts?

First thing you need to learn about OI is you can't pick a fishing day a week in advance on a trailer boat this time of year, any time of year really, but especially not now. So don't let them get their hopes up too high, its going to be blowing almost all week out of the NE.

There may be a stray mahi out in the stream, but nothing worth targeting, and with all the NE wind, the stream will be so jacked up all you'll be doing is holding on.

I wouldn't take any kids out of OI this time of year on a CC, weather is to unpredictable. You may get a calm bluebird day, but the chances of that are strongly against you.

The best thing you could do is bring them back in July or later when MAHI are abundant and weather is stable.

All of us trailer boaters watch weather close and give the go ahead the day before, not a week before.

    Good luck

Thanks for the feedback - we've (me and 2 of the boys) gone out of IO a fair amount and I agree it can be/usually is nasty- the sand build up is all over the net - following the fleet out was my game plan for the sand.

Great link for the wind and waves at diamond shoals, hadn't see that one before -

Well.... - looks like plan B (if the weather coop) maybe to chase the Rockfish.

We all have cabin fever -

No problem, but even if you get out of the inlet and get to the stream, this time of year with that hard break 55-70 deg the stream is ripping and with any wind out of the north quad, it will be bad, real bad for a trailer boat.

Last trip on my books with strong Mahi was May7th, grass lines had formed above the point around 650 and were full of Mahi with some sails and tuna mixed in.

I know they are here earlier, but that is the last documented trip with abundant mahi; mostly gaffers and big bailers at that point,
