if your gonna add swivel mount 130 class rod holders to the gunnels of a boat, and leave the factory installed 30 degree ones... how much space do you need to leave between them so as to not risk the integrity of that section of gunnel?

Atleast a foot cause you're gonna need a backing plate.
A few different companies make inserts that fit inside your current rod holders to make them a swivel holder. When you don't want them to swivel, you just pull the insert out. Would this be a consideration? Wouldn't have to drill more holes and add more rod holders.
I've got a couple of these - they work well. Drop them in when you need them, keep them out when you don't...http://www.tgttackle.com/tgt-rod-swivel.htm
The only problem with the drop-in inserts on a 30 degree holder is the rotation of the rod. It wants to put the reel handle so close to the gunnel when you turn it that you can't turn the handle. The straight up swivel are the only way to go. They are great not for trolling, but for bottom fishing with bent butts as well.
you dont like them for trolling??
see, i was thinking of installing 4. 2 on the corners, and 2 up forward of the 30degree standard ones. use the corners for my flats, and the swivels up forward for running bent buts that i run up in the riggers. then i still got the 30s in the gunnel and 2 on the post for running a center
I meant to say they are great not only for trolling. I love them for trolling. Sorry for the lost words.
no worries
you dont have to put lifters in if your dropping a short bent butt in there as a opposed to a long do you? im having trouble remember
I have two of the drop-ins and they work just as well as the other standard Lee swivels. Just be sure you have backing plates on the non-swivel rod holders. It does depend on the brand/model of the butt you have, though. That doesn't sound quite right, does it??!

No. Not in the swivel mounts. I don't use long bent butts, as all I do is stand-up, and have never had a problem.
