Im lost guys. Do you need extenders for short bent butts or long bent butts? And do they work in 30 degree holders with bent butt rods or should they (rod holders) be left alone?

Depending which rod holders you have, you may need extenders for short butts. I have the Lee Heavy Duty holders - They are too deep for my short bent butts if I don't put the swivel adapters in (and you really want swivels for bent butts anyway...)
The long bent butt on my planer rod fits the holders fine, but I use the swivel adapter anyway.
If you are starting from scratch, you can get swivel rod holders - If not, I think you'll be happy with the adapters.
Actually, Aftco makes short bent butts that require either a lifter of some type or a special short rod holder to fit right. If you don't have these things, the rod never bottoms out in the holder(which causes them to inconveniently fall out of the rod holder at the most in-opportune times). I do not know if Aftco fixed that problem in their newer short bent butts.
For years I have used Pacific Bay butts. I got one of the first Pac Bay short bent butts that was specifically designed to fit correctly in a standard rod holder and they fit perfectly. They are half the price of Aftco as a bonus. You will never convince me that the Aftco is any better for a 50 lb class aluminum 2 piece butt.
I went online and looked at the rod holders posted above and they are a third of the cost in the cataloges? Are these of good quality and will last?
Just to be clear - the link I posted above is just for the drop-in inserts, not rod holders. I use the ones above on my boat and they work fine for me, but I haven't been using them long enough to tell you how well they hold up long term - only get to fish a few dozen days a year.
Thanks i will have to give them a try.
If any of you guys are looking for top of the line super high quality swivel rod holders let me know. There are some guys in southern Maine that make some of the best I've ever seen or used. I actually have a few that I haven't installed yet, I'm in MHC if anyone wants to see them. They're high polished 100% stainless, they come with stainless backing plates and stainless hardware, depending on how many are interested they'll be between $100-$125 a piece. Let me know.
