I nominate this as the worst thread I have ever read on this site. OMG what a mess where to begin?

First off, what reel you got spooled with 40 and why???

Drag curves and spool sizes are designed for specific line diameters

If you say yer bottom fishing with 40 I'll letcha off the hook. But not if yer trollin or chunking. I have never seen a reel designed for 40. Please enlighten me.

    Re swivel or knot???
    Allways use a swivel

If yer trolling baits are fine ya gotta remember there will be times they get weeded, there will be a flip flop when you deploy, there will be times you gotta clear it really fast. These line twists add up fast.

For the guy using 80 mainline and 100 flouro leader. Why pay extra for flouro? If you tell me yer chunking and it is denser and sinks fast and even then ya get a tip o da rigger. If uzs try to tell me its because it has the same refraction as the water and is invisable. I say gimmi a break. Maybe tap water but not the dynamic water of the ocean. I have sfished in so many different colors of ocean I simply can't believe the line can change color to match.

Just use clear and get the thinnest 100 you can find. Diameter has everything to do with a shy bite

Consider getting better guides on yer rod if you think they gonna explode. omg

Learn to tie a proper knot. Ya wanna fish in saltwater learn a couple saltwater knots! Remember the thing I said about diameter?
If yer knot is only 60percent breaking strain you gotta add an extra 30percent test just to be safe at the desired leader strength. Less bites the higher yer leader diameter!!!!

No bass fishing knots in salt water!!!

If yer jigging use a swivel. No brainer

If yer chunking and ya got um worked up to the point u can jack pole um into the boat. ya don't need a swivel. Otherwise use a swivel.

Ok now this thread is outta the trash

    Ahi,
Couldn't have said it better myself. Short answer is, unless your really know what you are doing, use a swivel.

    set ups

    Ahi,
I'm not trying to say my method is better than the next guy's, just sharing info but it is pretty common to fish with 40# line in my neck of the woods. Out of OC, MD I tuna chunk with 40# at the largest and often 30#, this is for yellowfin in the 30-60 pound range mostly (not large bluefin or scallop boat chasing). I'm running it on tld 25's or 30's and it is pretty standard, leaders are 30 or 50 pound fluoro and I know there is a advantage using fluoro for this application. It's not my practice but plenty of guy's around here use improved clinch nots for this as well, we are running less than 15# of fighting drag so what does it matter. I also use the 40# set ups for light trolling as well, they are ideal for schooly tuna, dolphin and whitey as well. All of my chair rods and standard trolling mainline is 60# or better, I'm not that patient. I know I'm getting off the subject of the swivels but this is pretty common practice in my neck of the woods. And I use a swivel of some sort on everything.

50# mainline, 80# spro swivel, 10 feet 40# flouro carbon

    Don't knock what works.

    Worst thread ever?????

Ahi, give me a break. A man asked an honest question and people gave honest answers, and it was about fishing. Last I checked there is no 100% right or wrong way to do this and to BASH a man for asking for some help is down right wrong and not normal for this site.

Now for my 2 cents on the question.

When I am fishing wind ons for meatfish trolling I like to crimp a spro swivel inbetween the main line and a long wind on leader. The small spros will go through my guides. I use 80 or 100 pound wind ons on my 50 pound outfits, 40 to 60 feet. I use 60 or 80 on my 30 pound outfits , same length.

When chunking I use a ball bearing swivel and 6 foot of leader, unless the fish are line shy and in my chunks. Then I may use a long lighter leader connected by double uni knots.

As far as fluoro, I am sold on its abrasion resistance when trolling or chunking. Invisibility is a whole 'nother matter. I can't believe it is truly invisisble, cause I can't use 400 pound chunking... the fish see it!!

    Hope this helps.

Hey guys, thanks for all the input. I have always fished inshore and for kings but have just started the gulfstream fishing. Sorry if the question was a bit elementary. I just got a set of the tld 30a's for out there and they are spooled with 40. I could not justify to spend the money on the gold reels so I guess these will have to do. I am just trying to get a feel of how to rig some stuff. As i posted earlier, i went to the stream a few weeks back and got skunked. I am trying to fix that for the next time. thanks again for all the help
