    Striper trolling rods?

Im looking for some opinions on favorite striper trolling rod and reel set up. I have 6 old tld 20s and 25s that came from florida sailfishing and bottom fishing which all have sam scott and star trolling rods on them. I was looking to get 4 new rod and reels for the chesapeake bay next spring. I'm not looking for real high end expensive reels, all their doing is holding on to a 38 inch striper. thanks

    Slayer,
I use IGFA 20 blanks. They give good a action for the lures and still have a good backbone for the fight.

I am up the road from you. If you want to stop out this fall, let me know and the door is open to you.

definately get with kevin, as that is his neck of the woods. if you are using live bait then use a live bait rod(like the seeker clb series- the clb704 is a great one for kings and stripers) and your hookups will be better. if you are trolling plugs or spoons then i second kevin's recommendation.

I bought the Chesapeake Bay standard combo last year and they have held up great (Penn 330 GTI Reel with the Slammer rod). It handles umbrella’s well. $159 at bass pro, but I found them for $109 at some local shows.

The tld combos you have will work fine. For many years, the standard reels on the Chesapeake have been Penn 309's, 320's and 330's.

As far as trolling gear goes, most prefer levelwind reels since it's a common practice to count how many times the levelwind passes back and forth across the reel to help gauge how far back (ie - "how many bars back?") the lures are placed when setting your spread; 1 bar = the levelwind moving across from one side of the reel to the other... 1 bar lets about 10-12 ft of line out.

If you plan on pulling umbrella rigs, I suggest a heavier class reel like a Penn 113 or 113H or the 340's and 345's which are the 3/0 and 4/0 reels with levelwinds. The 330's will work for pulling umbrellas but the heavy pull from them will take it's toll in the long run. The Tld 25 will work well for this.

Many anglers are also using the Shimano Tld's and more recently the Tekota's. Most people I've talked to have been satisfied with both of these. The test of time will tell me how the Tekota's will stand up to the use on the Chesapeake.

Others have used Okuma Convector and Titus series reels which I've found may be fine for the weekend warrior, but serious fisherman and Charter Boat use takes it's toll on them. As a fishing reel repair man, I've found these reels require frequent maintenance and the durability just isn't there for long term commercial use.

So, give Kevin a call so he can hook you up with some sweet rods and striper tips and feel free to give me a call if you have any questions about striper tackle and techniques. I'm in Pasadena so you're welcome to join me on the water, I'll be glad to show you what I do.
