thought the new reg was supposed to prevent this......no culling since they get to keep 2000lbs versus 50 fish. and they could offload to buddy boats their excess catch... only one boat would have the expense of the trawl which would be shared . pics the other day showed at least 6 trawlers . guess the commercial guys cant unite or are too stupid too figure that out. if this is still excess catch after they did share a haul then trawling must be banned for a more selective method. either comm hook and line or gill net.

Had this not come from Devon, I would wonder, and if this is the cast, it is time to stop trawling and netting for Stripes. It will be interesting to see how the Roanoke River spawn will be this year after seeing all this wast.

The biggest shame is is all the work that has been done to bring this fishery back is going to wast with the fish.

I sent an email to Devin's list of contacts and got a pretty quick reply that the message was getting through. According to Michelle Duval, "Please know that the NC Marine Fisheries Commission will be discussing management of the ocean striped bass fishery this Friday, February 11."

........ And at 2:45 pm today, they announced the ocean gill net season would reopen for one day starting at 12:01 am Wednesday for one day. They should have opened it last week at the same time the trawl season was opened, that way at least the gill netters could have gone behind the trawlers and scooped up the discards and sold them and made a paid check instead of letting them wash up on the beach.

I will never for the life of me understand how they think this is fishery management, this is fisherman management plain and simple.

Finally after 35 year's, someone else "beside's" me see's it for what it really is. I was told several year's back by the then Director of the SAFMC, "get used to it, we are going to control you guy's one way or the other". I was then told after my less than pleasant re-tort, that I had "pent-up animosity" toward's the Gov't. Yep, the more thing's change , the more they stay the same. Frank
