I just knew I was coming down with something-- with any luck it's only a 24 hr bug.![]()
I aggree with Fred--- for the most part. I'm a long leader advocate, and can't remember having another Hoo bite off my skirt, but I supppose it has happened. No doubt Fred's short leader theory will help in this regard--- but ya got to get the bite before the hooked fish can get "bite off"--- oh well, that's another debate.
Fred, here on the East Coast the wire is still sold by the "old" wire numbering system. I know Malin for example, puts both on their package ( wire # and "lb rest")-- but everyone in the South still goes by the wire size, e.g., #8,#10, #14, etc.
Wire is cheap--- even stainless. If you're a weekend warrior Catch a fish on stainleess it's trash--, use it one day and trash it---
Fish more often or on an extended trip--- use real Piano wire ( non Stainless)--- dirt cheap and better than stainless ( but will be prone to kink a little easier than stainless)
Glenn hit it on the head - Piano wire is dirt cheap and seems to get hit more often than coffee colored wire (doesn't seem like you can find silver stainless much anymore)
Piano wire WILL rust - especially if you put bionic brine on your baits after rigging. They are fine for maybe a day if you don't kink it - but do yourself a favor and re-rig. Wire is cheap - Fuel, Bait, etc ain't - It is not worth losing a fish because you were too cheap to replace the wire.
