What a great day....we left Owl's creek at arond 0440 or so to a dark but smooth ride out. Picked our spot based on the temp break over the 100 fathom line at the 400. There were many boats out on a overnighter with reports of Swords, and Mahi...no word of Tuna so we're figuring on another Mahi slam day with maybe a Wahoo thrown in for good measure....put lines out right at 0700 and within 10 minutes the right long, G&H blue and white sea witch Snaps out of the outrigger with force and starts screaming drag...we're thinking Wahoo but after a couple of minutes it's pretty obvious it's a Tuna of some sort by the way he was fighting. Billable Dave is first up and brings the fish boatside...once we get color we see it's a Yellowfin Tuna....STick steel to him and in the boat.....we almost had to break out the species identification book to confirm YFT as we haven't seen one in a long time !!!!....
spread ot again and right short pops and Casey is on the rod....we coach her a bit to teach her how to fight a fish, which she picked up right away and brings in a pretty large False Albacore.....lines out again and the planer pops....Otter on this one and turns out to be a lit up Skippy which will become bait for later in the day....
we drilled the spot for another hour or so and decide to head off to the deep where reports of large weed beds with Mahi are at.....get to about 500 fathoms at the 401 line and find a couple of boats working some pretty big weed beds...these are loaded with triggers, buoy jacks and all the Mahi you could want...out comes the skipjack and in goes the spinning gear.....kept about 15 for the dinner table and caught and released as many more ....
back up on the troll and immediately get lazered by a Wahoo on pink and white G&H sea witch...damn...work this area for a bit but it's pretty weeded up so we start trolling inshore a bit....lots of rips, sulpher lines and weed lines with water temps from 72 - 75 degrees.....
catch a couple more Gaffers when the right Tiki Bar with G&H sea witch trailing gets hit....I see the fish take the bait and know it's a Marlin, just not sure if it's a white or a blue yet...Otter's on the rod in case it's a Blue one but when he jumps we see it's a white....so off the rod goes to Dave Wessner as he hadn't had a white one yet and we needed to throw somebody in the creek when we get back......good fight and just incredible Video at the side of the boat with multiple jumps that we should be able to put up soon...just a beautiful big white, probably 70 plus pounds...this happened at the 386 in about 150 fathoms...water temps 74.9 and pretty blue water.....
troll a bit more and get a triple header Gaffers to end the day......gorgeous ride in to a ominous sky on the beach with some pretty wicked Thunderstorms building ot west....
get to Fisherman's Wharf where Mr. Wessner hits the drink...and then get Still Think'n back on the trailer before the bad stuff hits......Great day on the water with great people...can't wait to do it again........
I have a video link from youtube, I'm not smart on editing so it's pretty much raw....great boatside aerial display from the white though....Bob
