    Still Think'n 10/9 Report

I'm getting ready to head up to Rhode Island for 2 - 3 weeks on Monday, so I got a crew together on Thursday since the weekend looked like crap. Our Goal was Wahoo, Tuna or whatever else would bite...just wanted some pullage before I'm outta here during the prime fall offshore run.

It was a great run out with a nice 4 foot swell out of the NE as we set our spot on the 450 line in 50 fathoms...this was based on the last sattelite shot we were able to see. Well, we pass 50 fathoms water is still 67, pass 100 fathoms water is 68, pass 300 fathoms still no water...finally at the 500 fathom mark we find the break...water looked like crap and there wasn't any life on the break that we could see......

So we put out a couple of high speed Wahoo lures and start trolling north at 15 knots....Had one great hookup which unfortunately did not stick....ended upon the North wall of the Norfolk canyon where we found quite a few long line sets with high flyers.....worked these for a bit pulling a couple of Mahi and couple of mystery bites but not really what we were looking for.

We troll inshore to the 600 line in 50 fathoms and find a really great weedline with quite a bit of debris scattered, well about the time we get to working this, the wind kicks up to about 20 - 25 out of the south and commences to just bust apart the best looking structure we've seen all day...we did manage a couple more nice Mahi but no Wahoo or tuna were to be seen.

ended up back on the South wall of the Norfolk canyon where some nicer water had pushed in,73 degrees and a clearer green/mixed than we were seeing all day....as I'm looking back at the spread I see a bill cutting in on the Left short rigger, pop...zzzzzzzzzzzz off she goes....then she drops the bait...now Dave has the Left long in his hand dropping back and the fish bats this around a bit....off the left long and onto the center shotgun islander which the fish commences to destroy but does not come tight....

Dave is still paying back line on the left long Pink and White sea witch by G&H lures and finally comes tight.....now my guys always love a good creeking and they are especially fun in October when the water is just a little cooler....Dave Had just landed his first White on my boat the week prior and graciously handed off the rod to Mark a LT in the USN who was a White Marlin Virgin....I can smell a good October creeking working here....

Mark does a great job on this white, he had pulled about half a spool on my 50W but we had gotten all line back and making good progress.....The fish makes a couple of jumps and we're looking at a dam nice White, 80 plus easily....

work the fish to the side of the boat where Don bills the fish but is unable to get my sea witch back so we had to cut the line...this fish was a beast, I've got some video that is being edited over at Don's house and I'll post when I get it.....So Still Think'n scratches it's 3rd Billfish in the last 3 trips and fortunately they all end in somebody going into Rudee Inlet Creek !.....

We get back to the dock and Launch mark into the brown inlet water and hear a "BRRRRRRRR" as he surfaces quickly and races to get out of the water...I love it....

Now I'm not a Marlin fisherman, don't really fish for them as I"m always looking for meat fish...if we can catch all these Marlin with Spreader bars out, Planers down, Penn Internation 50's and 70's, there must have been a ton of them this year....I"ve probably seen more bills in the spread this year than many years before..

Anyways...off to Providence Rhode Island for the next several weeks, hoping for unseasonably warm weather up there while I'm in the state.......Bob
