After looking at the temp and chlorophyll shots, I decided to head to the steeples today. It was my younger brother Jordan's first spring time stream trip, so I was hoping to put him on some fish. We put lines in around 3 miles inshore of the numbers, in 69 degree water. Just inshore of the structure was a nice temp break, going to 71 degrees. On the first pass over the numbers, I look back and see stripes after my dasiy chain. I grab the short flat, crank it in a couple of turns, and the hoosky nailed it. After a quick 1o minute fight, we box number one, around 20 lbs. About 30 minutes later, The short flat goes to screaming again. 15 minutes later, hoo number 2 in the box, around 30 lbs. About an hour later, the bird/green machine I had way long sounded off. This fish peeled off 300 yards of line, then bit through the fluorocarbon. We trolled for another hour or so with no love, and decided to go jigging. First drop, I hooked a decent hoo, which managed to bite me off. Next up, Jordan caught a 35 lb jack. This pace kept up for the next 3 hours. We released numerous jacks, a scamp around 15 lbs, and a yellow edge grouper in the high teens, as well as a few false albacore. On the way home, I decided to hit a bass number offshore of the tower a ways. In 30 minutes, we put 20 or so knotheads in the boat. What a great day. I'll post pics tommorow, as soon as I get them off the camera. Final tally, 2 wahoo, numerous jacks, 2 grouper, a few boneheads, and 20 or so big bass.
