    STEEL TO KILL!

I'm in the market for a whole new line of gaffs and wanted a little input. Figured this would be a good forum for this. I need a few gaffs and am looking for 4" hooks only. I wanted pompanette but I don't see any with an 8' handle. Don't they make one of these? I have 2 older 3" hooks with 8' handles and I love em. Allows me to put bigguns on the deck that are a little boat shy. Now I see that Aftco makes these with 8' handles but they are in fiberglass only. Never handled one of these. Need some input. Do you guys like or dislike fiberglass handles and why. Did look at a few Top Gun gaffs last season and they seemed nice but again I'm looking for some hands on input here. All replies are appreciated.

    Ed,
Its 6.5ft long has a pointy bronze thing on the end of it and some parachute cord attached haha. Personally I hate the aftcos after bending a few across my body I am sure someone will have some great input on this one.

A pointy bronze thing at the end you say?? Attaboy Rory, way to start things off on this topic. I can see if we end up on the same deck this season it'll be a thing of beauty.

Well after useing my glass gaff that Clt_capt made for me, I would say to get you a couple. Both he and Flatliner Keven makes them and you will not bend the gaff...

IMHO the AFTCO Fiberglass Gaffs are too lightweight for heavy fish like BFTs. That comes just from handling them in Tackle Shops - I have not used them on the water...

That said - there are some heavier duty fiberglass gaffs available - I make some, Flatliner makes some - That use a much heavier duty shaft - You can flex them, but haven't broken one yet...

Blank Lengths are available up to 10 Ft - Here are some I've made recently.

Thanks for the input all you steel men! An order has been placed for my first 8' glass handled 4" steel death weapon. Really looking forward to breaking her in the only proper way I know how. BFT's be afraid, be very afraid!
