Well what better way to start 2010 than smacking some fat specks! This past year has been a time of highs and lows for me but we sure had some great fishing trips, especially with the specks and today was no different! Joined my partner Phil for some speck hunting and it didn't take long to find them, 3 nice 4lber.s in the box then we went thru a wad of small ones.
Decided to move and literally found ourselves fishing in a ditch We both hookup with nice fish around the mouth of a very, very small creek, Mine throws the hook at the boat but Phil's hang on for the net ride. MMMMM? I wonder Lets see what else is in there, so we creep in and find 2 6ft. deep holes and boy were there some hungry specks waiting!!! Nearly every cast the ML's were getting ravaged, threw a ton of 12-15 in. fish back and snagged several nice 3-4lb. fish before the tiny spikes attacked
Moved again and found a few more decent fish then it got crowded so we headed for open water before hitting the ramp. Nice little cove and boy did I get the strike of the day! Fish doing the headshake then goes on the run, not wanting to pull him off I just hang on. Headshaking continues and here come the ML to the boat, I guess it wasn't to his liking Phil gets several heavy strikes too and i get tagged a couple more times but no hookups, but we will try this hole again!!!
Finished with 10 fish 2.5-4lbs, released at least 20 14in fish, a gaggle of spikes and lost at least another 8 very heavy hitters. I pray this very cold snap we are going to get doesn't hurt them to bad as the fishing has really started to pickup. Coldest water we have fished all year 46-47deg. at one point. Fished the same 2 ML's all day, 2 different colors did the job!!
