    IS IT STAINLESS ... OR IS IT BULLSHIT?

    I CRY BULLSHIT!

    I WISH I HAD A QUARTER FOR EVERY ITEM AND PRODUCT I HAVE DEEP-SIXED WHICH IS CLASSIFIED BY TACKLE AND BOAT PRODUCT MANUFACTURER'S AS "STAINLESS STEEL"

    IT IS PATHETIC I TELL YOU......RUST HERE...AND RUST THERE....RUSTY SPOTS EVERYWHERE!

    CLAIMING A PRODUCT TO BE STAINLESS IS WRONG IF IT DOESN'T MAINTAIN IT'S ORIGINAL NBOX LOOK.......IT'S SORT OF LIKE THE CALORIE LABELING ON SOFT DRINKS AND TEAS STATING 110 CALORIES PER SERVING ....PER SERVING???? HOGWASH I SAY!
    THEN YOU STATE IN SMALL PRINT THAT THERE ARE 2.0 SERVINGS IN A BOTTLE ! .....HELL WE DRINK THE WHOLE 16 OUNCES AT ONE TIME YOU NITWIT .....! AND THAT COMES TO .....WAIT....LET ME DO THE MATH.....OKAY...THAT COMES TO 220 CALORIES AND NOT 110 AS DESCRIBED!!! SHIT!!! NO WONDER I AM OVER-WEIGHT! PUT 220 CALORIES ON THE STUPID LABEL AND BE HONEST WILL YA? AND THEN STAMP FRIGGING YOUR STEEL ..."TEMPOARILY STAINLESS UNTIL YOU USE IT" AND I WILL SHUT THE HELL UP HERE!

    WEBSTERNBOX DEFINES STAINLESS AS : FREE OF NASTY ASS RUST ....AND PURE OF BRONZY RED STAIN CRAP....YOU STAINLESS PEOPLE CHARGE OUR ASS A PILE OF HARD EARNED MONEY FOR SUPPOSEDLY STAINLESS STEEL PRODUCTS SO WHY NOT GIVE US OUR MONEY'S WORTH....

    IF IT'S CHINA'S STAINLESS STEEL THAT IS CAUSING THIS....THEN SWITCH FRIGGING COUNTRIES FOR SOME BETTER STAINLESS....I MEAN HOLEY CRAPOLA MAN....I THINK CHINA INFECTS THEIR STAINLESS IN THE NAME OF PAYBACK OR SOMETHING!! MAYBE WE SHOULD TRY FINDING SOME STAINLESS STEEL IN PAGO PAGO ...OR ICELAND..... MAYBE EVEN IDAHO ....BUT FIND IT IN A COUNTRY THAT IS SORT OF FRIENDLY TO THE U-S-OF A ......OKAYYY?

    FOR YEARS I HAVE FOUND MYSELF CLOROXING UNDER GUNNELS ...CLEANING THE SPLATTER OF PIT DESTRUCTION .....AND I HAVE SEEN THE DREADED RUST ....THE NUTS AND SCREWS THAT SECURE ROD HOLDERS IN PLACE......EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM IS FRIGGING RUSTED!!! GO LOOK FOR YOURSELF....IT'S PATHETIC!

    TO ALL MANUFACTURES OF STAINLESS:
    I WANT YOU TO MAKE YOUR PERSONAL AUTOMOBILE'S STEERING WHEEL OUT OF THE SAME RUST....I MEAN THE SAME STAINLESS STEEL THAT YOU MAKE MY PLIERS FROM..AND MY CRIMPING TOOLS... AND THE SCREWS ON ALL BOATS ....AND ALL THE HARDWARE THAT IS RUINING OUR RIGS!! AND LET'S SEE HOW YOU LIKE HAVING RUST ON YOUR NICE SILK TIE!

    WAKE UP AND GIVE US OUR MONIES WORTH HERE!

    Unfortunately, there are several different types of stainless and the number primarily describes how much ferrous iron and how much chrome or nickel ( if forget which) is in the alloy. 400 series stainless steel is much more prone to rusting and discoloring than 300 series stainless. If it's 304 stainless, then it's the really good stuff. If it's 430 stainless, then it pretty much stinks. Until manufacturers are forced to differentiate between one stainless steel from another, your guess is as good as anothers. I would be willing to bet that the only ones using high quality stainless steel are going to trumpet that little tidbit of information whereas the lower quality manufacturers are going to hide behind the missing information.

    All of you outboard guys. Put a magnet near your Stain-Less props and tell me if it has ever even been in the same room with real stainless..now do the same test with your silverware. Which one is a better grade? Oh the humanities!

    Reel Fanatic's on the right track here..... you'll see 400 series stainless primarily in products such as knives, scissors, etc. It's physical properties are more conducive to maintaining an "edge" for sharpening characteristics. .... 300-Series (304, 316, etc.) have better strength properties (relatively speaking), therefore you'll find boat hardware such as cleats, railings, rod holders, fasteners, washers, etc made of 300-series. Then you have the superwhamadine of the stainless family which is the "L" series (e.g. 316L) which means it has particularly low carbon content ...which means it's the BEST in preventing rustola......

    Just a little clarification here..... 304 SS is the most commonly used stainless. ... however 316 is the best grade for marine applications....also nuclear

    Here's a little chart......

    * 200 Series—austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloys
    * 300 Series—austenitic chromium-nickel alloys
    o Type 301—highly ductile, for formed products. Also hardens rapidly during mechanical working. Good weldability. Better wear resistance and fatigue strength than 304.
    o Type 302—same corrosion resistance as 304, with slightly higher strength due to additional carbon.
    o Type 303—easier machining version of 304 via addition of sulfur and phosphorus. Also referred to as "A1" in accordance with International Organization for Standardization ISO 3506.[6]
    o Type 304—the most common grade; the classic 18/8 stainless steel. Also referred to as "A2" in accordance with International Organization for Standardization ISO 3506.[7]
    o Type 309— better temperature resistance than 304
    o Type 316—the second most common grade (after 304); for food and surgical stainless steel uses; Alloy addition of molybdenum prevents specific forms of corrosion. 316 steel is used in the manufacture and handling of food and pharmaceutical products where it is often required in order to minimize metallic contamination. It is also known as "marine grade" stainless steel due to its increased resistance to chloride corrosion compared to type 304. SS316 is often used for building nuclear reprocessing plants. Most watches that are made of stainless steel are made of Type 316L; Rolex is an exception in that they use Type 904L. Also referred to as "A4" in accordance with International Organization for Standardization ISO 3506.[8]
    o Type 321— similar to 304 but lower risk of weld decay due to addition of titanium. See also 347 with addition of niobium for desensitization during welding.
    * 400 Series—ferritic and martensitic chromium alloys
    o Type 408—heat-resistant; poor corrosion resistance; 11% chromium, 8% nickel.
    o Type 409—cheapest type; used for automobile exhausts; ferritic (iron/chromium only).
    o Type 410—martensitic (high-strength iron/chromium). Wear resistant, but less corrosion resistant.
    o Type 416— easy to machine due to additional sulfur
    o Type 420—"Cutlery Grade" martensitic; similar to the Brearley's original "rustless steel". Also known as "surgical steel". Excellent polishability.
    o Type 430—decorative, e.g., for automotive trim; ferritic. Good formability, but with reduced temperature and corrosion resistance.
    o Type 440—a higher grade of cutlery steel, with more carbon in it, which allows for much better edge retention when the steel is heat treated properly. It can be hardened to Rockwell 58 hardness, making it one of the hardest stainless steels. Due to its toughness and relatively low cost, most display-only and replica swords or knives are made of 440 stainless. Also known as "razor blade steel". Available in four grades 440A, 440B, 440C (more common) and 440F (free machinable).
    * 500 Series—heat resisting chromium alloys
    * 600 Series—martensitic precipitation hardening alloys
    o Type 630—most common PH stainless, better known as 17-4; 17% chromium, 4% nickel
    * Cheap-Ass Chinese Stainless Steel - Not even actually stainless steel...it is made of reprocessed rust particles from old war ships.....

    Here's a little hint....if you're buying something and it says that it's "stainless steel" without specifying which grade of "stainless steel"...then you're probably getting cheap ass Chinese stainless steel.

    I feel pretty dumb... I just realized the "low calorie" chips I've been tearing into like a mako tears into a school of bluefish has something like 137 servings in it...looks like I need to get to the gym

    Do you wanna talk metal

    Quik rundown Boxala you can't make the non rusting stainless hard without spending the big bucks. What they call stainless on those pliers is classified as such but it won't get hard enough to be worth a damn unless it has some carbon and walla...carbon makes rust.

    Thats the short version I have much more ifin you want it

    JD pretty much summed it up in a short version. Me being in the scrap metal recycling business i can tell you that todays stainless is not what it was back years ago. I see "316L" on boats that starts rusting from the minute salt gets on it. Seems that we are seeing alot less nickel and more magnetic pull to the better grades today than what should be. Just like most things it ain't made like it used to be.

    Unfortunately the Rocket Scientist is dead on the money here - Stainless "Steel" is always a compromise between malleability, durability, ductility, hardness, etc.

    it would be a lot better to refer to it as "rust resistant" steel - unfortunately it is probably the best choice cuz it is pretty cheap compared to the alternatives - Titanium, gold (won't hold an edge for shit, but won't corrode ), ceramic (can be really brittle)
