With the boat on its way back to Cape May, I am beginning to prepare our Drum Tackle.
For those interested in how we fish for black drum fish on the delaware bay here is a post i created a while ago with detailed information and pictures
"DRUM"ROLL PLEASE...
Starting with spooling the outfits with brand new 50# spectra, breaking down the reel components and cleaning and greasing thoroughly. We have all custom JRP spinning rods fitted with Shimano 6500 Baitrunners, We also have custom JPR acid wrapped convention rods with Shimano TLD15 star and lever drag reels.
I use all Gamikatsu Octopus J Hooks 9/0 and 10/0 for drum fishing,
Here is a quick pictorial of how I rig the terminal end of my drum set up.
I start with 40-60# highseas flourocarbon leader material, and Snell my 10/0 I use a uni-style snell as through experimentaion snelling has provided better hook sets with almost every hook being right in the mouth, but still I find the palomer the best alternative if you do not want to snell
First guide your line through the eye of the hook, always entering on the "point side" of the hook. I then make a simple loop and pinch it between my thumb and forefinger.
Then make 6-10 wraps overtop the shank of the hook and back through the loop
Simultaneously pull both the standing line and tag line to snug up the wraps
Finally pull the standing line taught to cinch the snell
For the swivel I use a AFW crane swivel 133#, and attach it using a simple palomer knot.
Double your line and pass it through the swivel
Then make a simple over hand loop
Place the swivel through the end loop then simultaneously pull the standing line and tag line to cinch the knot
