Spread Tip - Wide OpenTuna Bite

Whenever I am fishing on my boat I like to run mostly my stuff. my bars and chains. The reason is obvious, I believe in my stuff and also want to see what produces and what doesn't. Now you would figure on an openwide tuna bite I would throw 10,000 squids out their and try to get as many pictures as I could to sell more squids. But I learned after watching our crew tinker and tinker during this Wide Open Tuna Bite that sometimes less is more. Here is what we did and what I learned.

At first we were running three bars and were doing just fine. We were banging two or three at a time. Then we went to 3 bars and 2 teaser chains and the results were the same. 2 or 3 at a a time. Normally some folks would be happy with those results and don't get me wrong we were tickled. But Ernie did notice that the bars would get hit and maybe the bird would get hit. But I had a crew that was a bit greedy. I mean they wanted all 9 to go down all the time. So they kept tinkering with the spread. And we kept widening our search circle. Well after tinkering with many bars and chains all the way down to zero bars and chains we finally found the magical combo to consistantly have all 7 rods go down. The ticket on this trip was 1 single bar right down the middle Just about out of the whitewater surrounded by Ballyhoo baits. The bar would get hit and then we would watch as mayhem would begin. as soon as the bar went down the explosions on the baits started.

I don't think Shark or Ernie were gonna stop tinkering until they figured out the magical combo. Hell we even had the miller lite teaser can out thier. I have always said that tinkering is in the blood of every successful fisherman. We could have be satisfied with picking em off 2 and 3 at at time but with an experience crew such as Shark, Ernie, Wayne and Eric in the pit it was obvious to me early that they wanted all rods down all the time. Here are some of the results

All down - Shark, Eric and Wayne on the rods. The two bridge rods are bent over as well.

    The results are stacking up

This might be my Favorite Picture. Notice what is going on here. First Shark is on the rod. Don't let him fool you folks he loves to crank on dem tuners. But look are Eric, he is rerigging a bally and Ernie is reaching for a bally to rerig. Nobody is just standing their and watching the cranker. As soon as they would rerig the lines would be back in. It didn't matter if we had 4 on or none. They would figure out a way to keep the baits in the water without getting fouled.

Erice on the release and Shark teasing one into striking. Shark's rod is getting tight as I snapped this picture

    Where are the grundens?

Bill, I just noticed that their were no GRUNDENS on the trip. Is that possible? I know it was sunny an 80 and the tuna were snappn, but there had to be a Grundens appearance. It just wouldnt be right.

    Please report.

The grundens made a brief appearance on the chilly ride out. But he tore himself away becuase he got hot while cranking in all those tuners. Honestly I never knew he was such a experienced angler. I think anyone who charters the Andrenaline Team should ask SharkJP to crank on at least one tuna per trip. He will explain the finer points of angling while cranking. A true lesson while in action

Thanks for the clarification Bill. I knew that they had to come out at some point. I totally agree on having the shark teach classes on cranking in tunas. Mabey he can post a vid or something.

Bill, awesome report. And as coincidence (or is it?) would have it, that spread is nearly identical to my yellowfin spread that I fish in OC. Usually 8 ballyhoo baits all surrounding a single spreaderbar in the middle of the spread and two squid chain teasers on each side. Has been effective for me as well.
