    Spectra line question

I am going to be putting new line on my reels and have a couple of questions.

I want to spool them with Jerry Brown spectra and use a mono top shot and need some advise.

Penn International 80 st. What # spectra should I put on these. 95% of the time I will be meat fishing but I may fish one of the local Tourneys (WMO or M/A 500) and don't want to have to change out my line to be compliant. Will the 130# be compliant or does it break higher then stated? What do you guys reccomend if it does break at more then 130#'s 100#???? How much of whatever pound test you recommend will this reel hold? I want to get some bulk reels of line and need to know how much to get. I have two of these reels that I need to put line on.

TLD 50 LRS Same questions as above but I would think that I would use 80# (please correct me if I'm wrong) so being compliant shouldn't be a concern.

Any info would be a big help.

    Thanks

Most would opt for 200lb spectra on the 80ST but if you need to be IGFA legal that won't work. 130lb hollow spectra breaks above 150lb, so 100lb hollow would be the choice for both reels. It breaks around 112lb.

Spectra capacity depends on length and test of topshot...please advise.

    Thanks Basil,

I am thinking of at least 100 yard top shot and don't have a problem going longer. I am new to all of this and don't really know what to do. I am wide open for suggestions

I am planning on getting my line from you and was even thinking of coming up in the near future to have you load my 80's and 50's. Just have to save up some $ first. I'm not really sure about the tourny this year but from what I understand the spectra will last for years and I don't really want to replace when/if I do enter a tourney. I will be fishing Mako Mania this year and I'm not sure if they have a line class limit.

I guess that if I went with the 100# I would go with a 100# top shot????

I will be doing a lot of trolling in the spring and chunking in the fall.

Newbie here.... sorry for all the questions. I have been doing a lot of reading about this and there are so many different opinions on the subject.

If you went with 100lb spectra on the TLD50LRS it will hold 800 yards of 100lb hollow spectra plus 100 yards of 100lb mono. On the 80ST, it just is not cost effective to think about putting 100lb spectra on there, it would be over 3000 yards plus a 200+ yard topshot. Better to go with straight mono.

That's only if I set the drags to the line and not the reel, right?

I figured that I would still set my 50's at around 14 lbs of drag.

Will they be OK like that?

    Basil,

What mono would you recommend for the 80's?

Capt. Brian has a good point. I've seen a brand new TLD50LRS come apart setting the drag at 24lb. As for mono, I like Momoi Hi-Catch, Diamond, or Sufix. I personally fish the Hi-Catch.

Great questions Giant! I have the same two reels and was wondering the same thing! I was looking to put the 130# Momoi hollow braid on my 80w so I can use it for swordfishing also. I was looking to put a 80-100# mono top shot for trolling.

    Ifish,

Can I really expect to not be able to put much more than 24lbs of drag on the TLD50?! That doesn't really seem like a whole lot of drag for a 50w.

    Basil,

Two things a countable the age of the Graphite reels and around 19-24 lbs of drag, the sun kills and brakes down Graphite I'am saying this because you stated that you will use
then in sharking fishing or trolling. On Graphite reels i would
only use mono and Momoi & Sufix are only what I use
