    Thanks for the replies guys.

I guess I am over thinking all this stuff. I read what all the masters of the sport are doing here and feel that I should do the same.

I thought about it last night and came up with the conclusion that I'm better off with the KISS aproach...(Keep It Simple Stupid)

My main reason for wanting to put the extra line on my reels is from a couple of years ago when we hooked a slob eyeball that came to the boat rather quickly, saw the boat, and proceeded to take all my line and kept right on going..... Damn I wanted that fish!!! But how often is that really going to happen??? Do I need to spend $500.00 on putting line on a real? NOPE!!

I'm just a rec guy and should keep my equiptment in line with my knowledge. I tend to get a little carried away with things from time to time.

Thanks for helping me see this.

you can always back spool the 80's with mono and then put your 1000 yards of braid on it...I have 550 yards (300 yards of braid and 250 yards of mono) on a Saltist 50 done that way and have never seen the mono yet...

also the 100# hollow and up will be quite a bit cheaper than 80# hollow...

i got two aleutecnos 50s i want him to hook up for this upcoming season!!!
My 50w2s Alutecnos reels hold 800 yds of JBHC with 100yd 80lb topshot. They hold 1000yds with 30ft windon!!! I have 200 lb JBHC on my planer rod but put a few hundred yds of mono backing on it first. I like the 200 JB for the planer rod..Mark

That brings up a question I've had for a while. I use a lot of power pro on planer, deep drop and striper gear(at least 20 rods with it on). I don't put mono top shots on anything, just tie on swivel and drop. Are there any advantages to using JB? If I remember right it's got a slightly larger diameter since it's got a hollow core.
I've got a 9/0 that I'm going to spool up for an electric reel, planned on just using 100# PP or Sufix braid. Just want to make sure I'm not missing something, seems like everyone uses JB these days. I've never had a problem with PP, but read where some folks did. As I mentioned, there will be no tops shots added.
    Thanks,
    JT

yep thats what it means...its pretty popular on the West coast to do it that way...and a cost effective way of fishing with braid...if the mono is spooled tight it makes a perfect base for the braid to lay on top of and you don't have to buy 1000 yards of it and then have 2/300 yards left on the spool when your done spooling your reel...for example my Saltist 50 would hold around 750/800 yards of 50# braid...so I would have to buy a 1000 yard spool to fill it...by back filling it with mono I can buy a 300 yard spool of braid and still have the benefits of braid along with some extra line capacity and no wasted braid left on the spool...

if the hollow core can have a top shot spliced into it why not take advantage of that and back fill the spool with 100# mono...fingertrap your 100# braid and spool on your 1000 yards then topshot...chances are you will never see the mono filler and just saved yourself about $250...

NOTE...the amount saved is from Basil's post that the reel mentioned would hold 3000 yards of 100# braid...so by not using the additional 2000 yards at .14 cents a yard thats $280...but you will have a little mono cost in there so I figured $30 for that...

PowerPro is 4 stand. JB is 16 strand. One strand breaks with PowerPro, you just lost 25% of the line rating strength. That said, I've never had a problem with PowerPro either. But I do like JB's name better!
