SPECK-tacular Sunday - Va. Beach

It was the best day speckin' so far this fall (for me). Joe Hurst invited me to go along with him to get him started with speck fishing, so we met at Long Bay Pointe at 8 AM. The first stop was Rainey's Gut... nothing there after 30 minutes, so we went to a point of land with a deep gut next to it that sits inside the Narrows... again, nothing.

The last stop was a deep water (for specks) spot. We anchored in 6' and were casting to 15'. Joe figured out the white/red grub was what they wanted, and from then on it was "ON". At one point it was 8 casts, 8 fish... all between 16.5" and 21". Slow rolling the grub across the bottom was the key. Joe put on a double lead head "speck rig", and caught some double specks - Don't get much better. He also had the big fish of the day @ 22"... and made sure to keep the top spot by knocking a REALLY nice one off my grub with the net. "Sorry Al... I don't know what happened". Yeah right

Ended up catching 42 fish in about a 2 hour timeframe; 22 were tagged and released.

Joe, thanks for the invite... PLEASE don't think that yesterday was a good indicator of what speck fishing's like! OH, and if you're free this week, we can go practice netting. LOL

pretty work Al!!!!!!!!! i thought i saw you guys yesterday- i didnt do nearly as well as ya'll but got a few in shallow water. i was actually looking at a deep water hole i like to fish but didnt try it. maybe i should have and wwill do this coming 4 day weekend!!! wheres the pix???? lol, great job again- see ya out there- craig

Pretty work! A red and white wiffle tail used to be the ticket on the flats about 10 years ago.

Went back yesterday - same spot, same tide, same bait, same weather - NARY-A-BITE. Those fish have tails, dang-it. 42 one day, 0 the next.
