    Speaking of jigging tackles...

Played with a shimano saragosa 18000 today. For the money (300.00), I was very, very impressed! We will be carrying both the big 14000 and 18000 sizes, in addition to the 8000. No noticeable difference in the 8000 size between it and the new improved stradics, but both 14k and 18k sizes are said to have 44 lbs of drag. I put a few hundred yards of 80 lb pp on the 18k today, and locked her down. Buried a 50 lb hand scale and broke the power pro! Retied and tested its upper drag range, very smooth and good performance in this range (30-40 lbs). This provides the jigging angler with a much more affordable alternative to a 10-20k stella, and allows the angler to use appropriate drag settings and line tests for deepwater grouper/pelagic jigging. While more $ than the penn 760 slammer, it is a hair lighter, much smoother and has a very comfortable big handle which is the main setback of the few that exist for the penn. Just thought I'd post in case some anglers might be debating this issue or hesitant to get a setup due to the cost of the reel. Don't get me wrong, I believe the stellas are worth every penny, but this provides a cost-effective option as well as a top of the line combo that is not out of the question for entry level deepwater jigging anglers.

    Cheers,
    Arlen

    I havent decided yet.
Thanks! Im looking at buying a entry level setup for the deep jigging and this is good info. Would you say the Saragosa 18000 matched with the Trevala TFS58XXh would be a good entry level outfit thats up to amberjack?

Capt. Lee; Did you get my email with those pictures of the mirrolures?

Yes I did, did you not get my reply back? I am on the road and have to use a outside source to do emails and sometimes it does not send things out...

shore power - yes it would. That combo will be a great one and expands beyond the description of simply an entry level combo. It is a very nice setup to learn on though. I'd spool it with daiwa pe 6 (80 lb).

Arlen: Thanks I believe Im going to get one spinning and one conventional set up. This should do for me.

Capt. Lee: No I never did get a reply back? Anyway, Those were some sweet lures. Cant decide if I should sit them on a shelf or fish them. I think I will fish them though.

Arlen: How much top shot of mono do you guys use? Do you use flouro or just mono? I appreciate the info. you and Chip are putting out there for us all. I plan to try to put it to use off the coast here soon. Someone out of Va. Beach just broke the IGFA record for a yellow edge grouper this week so there are some beast out there in the canyons. I know where big amberjack live all summer up here as well so I plan to put this info to use.

havn't seen the sargaso, but have seen the Penn 760 drop in 800' of water and handle 30+ lb groupers and 80+ Aj's. The 760 will be my next combo with the XXL Trevalla. Wideload out..
