    Sorry to intrude...

but I wanted to ask a a question, if I could...about swivel rod holders. I was wondering if anyone has tried the drop in style swivel rod holders (see image)..Do they only work with zero degree rod holders? I don't really understand the need, other than trolling bent butts, right? But would a bent butt swivel if at in an angled rod holder, the bent butt just oscillate or twist in place.

Damn, sorry to interrupt but I've got this stuck in my head and just cant figure it.

I have 15 degree Lee Heavy Duty Rod holders on my boat. I needed to do something for the planer rod - I use the drop in inserts and have been very pleased with the way they work.

The rod does swivel and it takes some of the pressure off when the boat is turning. I wouldn't want to run the planer without some type swivel holder...

The ones I have are from Tournament Grade Tackle - they are easy to remove if I'm not running the planer.

    Kahi,

I know I'm gonna take heat for this "backwood's" solution that I use. It's really cheap, nothing to tear up and so simple a caveman could do it! I simply pick the rod up and drop a golf ball into the rod holder. I do it after the strike, while fighting the fish. Just take a piece of dowel rod, de-hooker, what ever and come in from the bottom and push it out. Your back at it. Frank

I wish I had thought of the golf ball instead... Those drop in holders ain't cheap.

Seems like a much more productive use of a golf ball.

    Great Idea

I like to Gold ball idea, those drop in inserts are not cheap...but my problem (among many) is that I purchased one, dropped it in the right short and put my planer rod in it....all I get is a slight twisting of the rod, not swiveling side to side...can't figure if its b/c the bent butt is too short or what..

Kahi, sounds like you have too short of a butt on the planer rod. I put a full on swivel holder on my boat and ran into the same thing with mine, had to swap out the butt.

Or you can pull the holder and move the swivel up by drilling a 1/4 hole thru the holder at the desired height and put in a 1/4 SS bolt/nut drop the swivel back in and go. Cheaper than a new butt
