After getting our rear ends handed to us Friday and feeling the misery that has blessed most of the BFT fleet we decided we needed a change of scenery yesterday. We left out yesterday morning aboard the Electric Bill with bottom gear and BFT rigs just in case the fish were out there in deeper water only to be greeted with another fog adventure. Just to get to the Port was a task, all eyes looking in every direction for those crazies who seem to not understand to slow down and use your running lights!
We plowed our way thru the BFT grounds in the fog, then it lifted around the 25 mile mark. Headed to the first mark, baits down, nice BSB in the box for E40, Jason and myself. After 20 or so nice 3-5lb. fish we moved to deeper water. Along the way we marked a good lump which resulted in a long fight for Jason with a 6-7ft. shark, looked like a big blacktip. Tried to get a few pics but fish was camera shy and finally cut the rig off. Moved off to the grouper grounds with high hopes. First drop looked good with Chip pulling up 2 undersize Amer. Reds, Jason and myself started on the Pinkies. Jason strikes first on the Reds with a nice 10lb. fish, so I send the jig down which gets hammered on the drop, thumb is a little cooked. Another nice Red in the box, more Pinkies and trash fish so we move again. Chip gets another undersize Amer. Red, I get a couple good Pinkies on the jig then the sharks show. Move again and Chip gets the big fishes of the day a 15lb. or so Red then a 20lb.+ Red Congrats Chip!!!!
With a rain squall moving inshore we decided t head to the hill, me at the wheel and the crew kicked back on the bean bags we had a nice run in until we ran into the fog bank around West Rock, thanks to the boat that gave us the heads up on other boats in our path. Nice to have radar!! Came out of it around NWP and man was it calm, birds crashing bait, bait stacked everywhere but no BFT, the misery continues!
Hit another fog patch around the cape but nothing like the first. Great day for us, considering how many days have been spent on the BFT's and there's some blood on the deck!! I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Good to hear you put a few in the box.. We've been hitting the bottom as well seing the tuna action is pretty much dead. We'll be heading out again tuesday to do some bottomfishing so hopefully they'll be chewing again... Ken
Marty we talked to a couple guys in a 29 Reg at the ramp that fished the BR, had a few knock downs, said they heard someone did get into the Hoos though, just didn't know where??
Sitting here behind the computer early am on New Years day trying to decide when we will drive back down to MHC. I have been reading and hearing how good the bottom fishing is down that way and enjoyed your report and pictures. Up our way now many many guys travel 60 miles offshore to the rocky bottom to catch sea bass weather permitting and wonder how many realize what quality bottom fishing is available down from the ports we target GBT from. Happy New Year and thanks again for the report.
