measure the max widest point of your boat (bow flair) and the max width of your trailer (guide posts) that will tell you if you are over.

and as a side note, research the law as best you can because the DMV offices don't even know I was told just last week I didnt need weighted tags because my vehicle was privately owned and the boat was not commercial, Raleigh Enforcement Division says otherwise
