It does take cajones... when I started on my own with the detail business it was scary. But, with the help of some really great people here on SFC I got started. (and I was down to only $20 in my pocket)

I have never been happier in my life.

I decided from the very first day that I would give 110% on every thing I did.
The best advice I received was from a friend, she told me "well hell, if your going to do, do it. And give your costumers the very best of what you got."

You can do this Capt. D... Hell, if I can do it anyone can.

Congrats on the good news -D-
I'm sure you will look back one day and say this layoff is the best thing that every happened to your career.
Youv'e got the skills, talent, and drive, so now just develop the contacts and execute.
When selling a job or submitting a proposal, remember a saying that I live by in my small business:--- "Don't confuse getting the project with doing the project".
I'll all work out--- Best of luck to you.

I wish you the best in all your future endeavors.

Thanks for all the well wishes and the feedback!

It has been a busy two days. Ive got meetings set up with the lawyer, accountant and the insurance guy. money has started its roll over and I have already have spoken to quite a few contacts that wanna give me work now, but have agreed for everybody's best interest to hold off a week or two until the incorporation is done and the insurance is set up.

Ive got a couple other things going on that I wont talk about yet as I know that my former employer knows "where I play"

I have been contemplating this move for a while but was too "scared" to pull the trigger. I have a buddy that told me that once I start that I will be too busy to worry and he was right. I guess all I needed was a little push. So here goes!

congrats on your venture.....scared...well overcoming the uncertainty is success...every business is a risk....and as many others have said....let your experience in your given field guide you and before you know it you will take pride in knowing that your competition was your former employer.....just smile and count $$$ you are putting in your pocket not the ex-boss'

shoot me a PM if u would like..as i am in biz in Maryland.... let me know what type of biz you are getting into and who was the former so i will not patronize....

Just an Update

Well, Its official, Im in business! I am now officially Artisan Environmental and Engineering, Inc.

Spent all morning on Thursday at the lawyers and all afternoon at MD SDAT(let me tell you that the DMV is heaven compared to the SDAT). As of 3:45 pm I'm incorporated. Insurance should be in place on Tuesday and away I go. Thanks again for all the encouragement!

The sad part is for the most part i'm sitting on the sidelines this offshore season.
