    Sniper Rod Set-Up Question

I've got my rod, Tiagra 80, 200yds of 135lb battleline and have a question on setting up the reel.

Am I correct with the following:

Reel: 400yds 130lb mono backing to a 150 Spro to 200yds battleline to Bridle?

If I'm correct, how should I connect the Spro to the mono backing and battleline?

If I'm way off here, please slap me upside the head and get me straighten out.

What to make sure I set this up correctly.

    Thanks

I don't like swivels and crimps down in my spool. They corrode and oxidize.

My recommendation is to have a dacron or hollow spectra "wind on style" loop spliced into your mono backing, ( if thats the way your going to do it. ) Tie a bimini in your battleline and do a loop to loop connection.

    Cheers,
    Jim

IT IS A NO BRAINER TO CHANGE OUT YOUR TERMINAL GEAR EVERY DAY OF FISHING...WHETHER IT BE SNIPER ROD....OR TROLLING ROD GEAR...IN FACT...IT IS QUITE ELEMENTARY IN MY OPINION TO DO SO

SINCE THIS IS THE STYLE I HAVE SHARED WITH THE WORLD FOR YEARS NOW....I WANT TO BE SURE THAT YOU ...SEA DRAGGIN' OL BUDDY.... DO NOT THINK I DO THIS KIND OF CRAPOLA

    Purple,
What I am saying is this would be MY preferred method for what you are asking.

    1. Spool on your mono.

    2. Chinese handcuff on a piece of Dacron or hollow spectra. Chinese Handcuff - How to with pics

    3. Then put a loop in it. Chinese Handcuff pt 2 - the loop

    4. Tie a bimini in your battle line.

    5. Make the Loop to Loop connection.

    6. Crank on your Battleline.

    7. Add your bridle or what ever you are doing and go from there.

Who knows, maybe at 8:00 I'll break out the bridle-less rig I have started using, just to spice things up a bit.

Marty's videos below show the exact idiot proof way to set it up. Even I could do it.

Even if Marty is using a new rod now. I believe he is still setting it all up the same just like in the video. It tells you everything you need to know, step by step.

Backing on the reel. Take the Battle line, make a 1 ft loop tie a double over hand knot, make sure it lays down right or it may cut itself off. Take the loop run it through the spro give it one half turn and do a four twist cats paw. Crimp the backing to the spro. Wind on your battle line. If you are letting the planer drag out 600 ft of line you're going to be in trouble and it WON"T get any deeper, plus you are going to have trouble tripping the planer. Marty taught me to use 130 mono for the bridle. This is good for about 2 or 3 trips, and then you have to change it out, stealth, I agree. I've given up stealth for strength and modified it with 150 stainless cable, I can run 8 TO 10 trips before changing it, and keeps the toothy critters from chewing it off if they hit it. At $30.00 per planer I want to keep them. I rig 3 size planers, #24, 16 and 12 for different sea states and we usually pull 2 planer rods during Wahoo time.
