Sniper Planner system

Hey guys,
I am not sure how to really use this thread and don't know much about it so hopefully you see this marty if not or anyone that see's this please any help would be greatly appriciated with the site and my questions about this setup. The setup that I am speaking of is the sniper planner setup that marty aka (Wahoo in da box) uses and has a video of on this site.I fished a similar setup for the last few years but was really liked the setup that he came up with so this is what I have. A custom planner rod that I use with a Tiagra 80w# 16 OldSalty Planner, Diawa Saltiga 150lb braided line, 300lb Mono backing, Moimoi Diamond 130lb Briadle 31 inches. Now the questions that I have are what lb leader is your 130ft leader and what type of connection did you use with backing to your mainline Wahoo in da box or anyone that uses this rig?

It ain't exactly lazer surgery but I like to use 100lb mono for my planer leader. Have been known to use 80 and I think I have 120 on it right now simply because that was handy. I have been happy using a small heavy Spro to connect my backing to the Braid--- just remember to change it often (the Spro that is).

80 lb leader is definatly on the light side as a good size fish could pop the line on the strike with all the drag required--- don't think it has ever happened to me though. 120lb is on the heavy side for tuners as we try to keep leader visability down.

THEE SNIPER PLANER ROD SET-UP:

I PREFER 400 YDS OF 100# MONO BACKING > THEN A 150#SPRO INLINE SWIVEL > 31" BRIDLE OF 130# MOMOI DIAMOND LINE W/DOUBLE BRL 1.3 CRIMPS & 150 LB SPRO INLINE SWIVEL ON EACH END OF THE BRIDLE > 132FT OF 100# ANY BRAND MONO LEADER OTHER THAN DIAMOND FOR YFT & SCHOOL BFT > OR #130 ANY BRAND LEADER OTHER THAN DIAMOND WHEN TARGETING WAHOO.

WHEN YOU ARE CERTAIN YOU ARE IN THE SCHOOL YFT OR BFT....I WOULD RECOMMEND NO WIRE TRACE AT THE HOOK'S END AS I SO USE FOR TARGETTING WAHOO....

THE PLANER BRIDLE SYSTEM IS NOT DESIGNED TO SUCCESSFULLY CATCH FISH OVER 100 POUNDS WITHOUT MAKING SOME QUICK DRAG ADJUSTMENTS ......WHY? .....BECAUSE OF THE TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF DRAG IT REQUIRES TO HOLD A #16 OR # 24 OLD SALTY DOWN WITH MINIMAL LINE CREEP........WHEN ANY SIZE FISH TAKES A SNIPER BAIT AT 50 LBS OF DRAG, THERE IS SOME SERIOUS HEAD SNATCHING GOING ON DOWN THERE! I HAVE EVEN PULLED IN A GILL RAKE OUT BEFORE.... ..........

THE KEY TO LANDING THE BIGGER FISH IS TO BE ATTENTIVE TO THE PLANER ROD AND IMMEDIATELY BACK THE DRAG DOWN ON IMPACT....( WHICH I DO THIS ON ANY STRIKE)................IT'S "EYES ON THE ROD TIP" AT ALL TIMES!!! .......

AT 58 YRS YOUNG I AM STILL FASTER THAN A GRANTS GAZELLE WITH A PACK OF RABID HYENAS CHASING AND USUALLY SHIFT MY DRAG DOWN IN THE 18 LB RANGE RATHER QUICKLY WHEN I SEE THE ROD TIP BEND AT STRIKE THIS IS SO IMPORTANT WHEN FISHING NORTH OF THE DMZ WHEN THE 100-180 LB BFT ARE PRESENT

Bonz another option is to take a drive north to Indian River and visit me for some hands on lessons you could get that while you are there signing up for either our tuna tournament July 4th wekend or our Marlin tournament July 24

Thanks for the reply Marty. I acutally looked at a piece of the clear underwater after you said something one day about the blue diamond glowing as running line and even the clear does shimmer/glow a little. Suffix 130, 100 and Ande 100 does not.

I find the difference in price when I am throwing away 100 or 200 feet at the end of every use is a big savings over diamond as well.

Thanks for the replys that should cover the questions that i asked. Box thanks again for taking the time to reply also. I wanted to ask you Box since I don't know how to get ahold of you directly, I am interested in your classes or school that you told me about when I met you at All Tackle in OC MD when you were on your way to the seminar in jersey that you were doing and we briefly discussed this rig and the WEAPON on the end. Please let me know how to get up with ya and shoot ya an email or contact you outside this forum that would be great.
